Re: Timing Belt Issue... Any idea how much damage?

Just wanted to say thanks for the advice on the site. The S70 fired right up and has made a couple of road trips already. A small oil leak has materialized but to be honest I was expecting as much. Mechanically its purring just fine. The noise that was present after the initial start up has subsided...

Re: Timing Belt Issue... Any idea how much damage?

But the new head came with lifters already installed. I just left them in on the install. They were greased with a pretty heavy grease and I added oil to each lifter before installing the top and added oil before the first run.

Re: Timing Belt Issue... Any idea how much damage?

Today was the day. All assembled, new plugs, checked the oil, added a half quart or so, added coolant, checked the timing marks, checked the timing marks, and checked the timing marks again. Turned the engine several revolutions and checked the timing marks yet again. She fired up rather easily and ...

Re: Timing Belt Issue... Any idea how much damage?

It's almost back together. I hand turned the crankshaft three full revolutions and everything stayed lined up perfectly. That mechanical timing belt tensioner is a #$%#&%^! This morning I will install the cam position sensor, the distributor cap, plugs, wires coolant reservoir and everything els...

Re: Timing Belt Issue... Any idea how much damage?

Thanks OL. Just to clarify the head bolt specs... Tighten all the bolts in sequence to 20 nm which converts to 14.75 lb/ft. Retighten all the bolts again in sequence to 60 nm(44.25 lb/ft). And then, in sequence, turn them all 130 degrees more.

Re: Timing Belt Issue... Any idea how much damage?

So here goes. I've gotten all the parts and pieces ordered to replace the cylinder head and the PCV system. Groton is the bomb and Clearwater Cylinder Heads is not too shabby either. The Groton order arrives today and the cylinder head tomorrow. I am ready for any and all hints, tips and suggestions...

Re: Cylinder Head Replacement

Great stuff. Thanks to O Lee for steering me to this page. I am doing the same repair to my 98 S70 and this information is invaluable. I'll admit I am a little unclear on the special tools that were mentioned. Any additional explanation?

Re: Timing Belt Issue... Any idea how much damage?

Pictures are attached... You got me on the lifters in oil and in original order. What are those consequences? I've already called and priced the head from the source you suggested. What else do you recommend replacing while I am in this deep? As I hope you can tell i am somewhat mechanically incline...

Re: Timing Belt Issue... Any idea how much damage?

Spent the morning(well most of the day actually) tearing down the engine. And there it was two nice little dimples in the top of each piston on the intake side. Bent valves on all 5 cylinders. Now to find a used head or have this one reworked. Any more suggestions?

Re: Timing Belt Issue... Any idea how much damage?

Well... I got the parts today and reassembled, set the timing and tried to fire it up. NO GO! It sounds pretty rough. I would compare it to the noise of a dragging starter. I pulled the plugs one at a time and did the old fashion compression test of stuffing a rag in the hole and turned the engine o...
