As far as I know the 2001 tranny's were simply bad regardless of drive layout (aka FWD vs. AWD). I believe you need the 3309 transmission fluid, but a short search through the forum should lead you in the right direction.

Great car. Can't beat the seats!
Some points:
1) transmission
The 2001 transmission was finicky indeed. Mine was changed at 36,000km by the previous owner.
+1 for transmission fluid flush. With 3309 transmission fluid only. Take about 10/12 quarts.
Toyota's fluid is a lot cheaper ...
