I believe its called "Oil Trap".
For Volovo owners, love and hate are the same word, sometimes...
Thanks for the tip. I'llo check into it.

So this applies with the Front wheel drive units too? The mechanic, who apparently worked at a Volvo garage seemed to think a regular...something 3 transmission fluid would work. He also suggested that switching to synthetic would "clean" out the system too much , reducing the effectiveness of seals etc...

For the PCV he said he had replaced hoses. He did not mention that oil trap. He has now done the seals, ...took all day... so, when I drive from Brampton to NIagara and back tomorrow, am I going to blow the seals again?

Can I get a list of what's been done to the car at Volvo dealerships? Including the tranny upgraded software? Is ths applicable with the Front wheel drive as well? A guy who works on Volvos a lot said that the FWD was OK.

It's confusing and troubling for me to see the conflicting information, and I am more inclinded to go with you guys.

I also noted that tonight after pulling everything out to do the seals, my Cruise Control is no longer working.... Hmmmm..

Curiouser and curiouser.

Georgeandkira wrote:Hello, FMI (For My Information): What does "...did the mounts and suspension" mean exactly? FYI: Since the main seals are being replaced it would be smart to address the cause. The oil collector box (for lack of the correct name) is known to clog and cause the internal pressure which causes the seals to fail. At 161K and no maintenance records you'd be foolish to ignore this item. Similarly the advice by polskamafia mij to change the transmission fluid and see to it's software upgrades is not to be ignored. Real quickly on transmission fluid: Toyota Type IV=Mobil 3309=Expensive Volvo fluid. Toyota's fluid is the way to go due to availability. Using the wrong fluid will be "One giant leap backward for mankind (you)". A dumb@ss mechanic might even lie to you and use the wrong stuff. I completely understand E170_ Driver's position. I hope to get good value out of my 2002 (w/108K). The stinking, filthy blue oval engineered the bad valve body into an otherwise great transmission left a bad taste in my mouth. I hope that the new owner's will foster the aftermarket repair parts section of the company so we can get parts in the future. Additionally, I don't need a car with a dozen processing systems-which require computer linking-built into it. I'm lucky to have found a specially ordered and well cared for car. I don't like having to hold my breath. Kira
Thanks Kira

You aren't alone in your advice and thanks. So the tranny you have is just a regular front wheel drive? Some guys who work Volvos all the time seemed to think the front wheel drive was no problem. He shifted the tranny back and forth a bit and pronounced it OK. He seemed pretty competent.

It's perplexing to be in the middle of the advice chairn and a weak link. I'm fine with whatever works, so thanks for the adcice.

As far as I know the 2001 tranny's were simply bad regardless of drive layout (aka FWD vs. AWD). I believe you need the 3309 transmission fluid, but a short search through the forum should lead you in the right direction.

Welcome aboard.
Great car. Can't beat the seats!
Some points:
1) transmission

The 2001 transmission was finicky indeed. Mine was changed at 36,000km by the previous owner.
+1 for transmission fluid flush. With 3309 transmission fluid only. Take about 10/12 quarts.
Toyota's fluid is a lot cheaper 7-8$/ltr (Volvo sells this stuff at 25$/ltr....) or you may find a sale at your local Canadian Tire.
2) Front suspension
Have it checked (lower ctl arms bushings, ball joint, end links, upper plate & spring seats)
If something has to be replaced, go OEM only on the suspension.
For the spring seats, you can install XC90 spring seats (they are stronger and they fit).
With the quality of the roads in Quebec, ball joints / end links are more succeptibel to failure.
3) brakes.
Brake Booster may have to be checked. mine busted at around 160,000 kms.
OEM brake pads are dusty. Akebono Ceramics are a lot cleaner.

These are the major points that I encountered.

One thing you can do is contact Volvo Canada and ask them if your car went through all the recalls.
And ask then for a Owner manual if the last owner kept it.... I got one free that way...

Thanks so much to you and to all the guys n' gals responding here. Before I bought the car , control arms were done..OEM or not II'm not slure. He apparently did the oil trap with the OVC system and I will be draining and filling the tranny shortly. Thanks for the particular recommentdations. I reallly do like the car and hnope I can get some years out of it.

Cheers
Paul

Thanks. I'll arrange a drain and full as recommended. Incidentally, when I double checked with Great Car, Sasha's company, Mike who ordered the parts, confirmed that all the necessary parts for the PVC system, including the critical oil trap , had been replaced which gives me great peace of mind. The guys at Great Car have been A-1, and never grumbled a bit when an indpendent mechanic found a problem. They spent a lot of time and effort making it right at no charge. They are certainly winning my confidence. As mentionned earlier Sasha has found Volvos or people. My experience has been A-1 with him. He can be reached at 416 832- 7087. I told him that I valued his integrity and way of doing business and that I would post on the net accordingly. My name is Paul, and anyone who decides to give him a call , you may feel free to quote me

Cheers and thanks for the good advice.
