Just an update. I removed and cleaned the ETM (throttle side and electronic side). It did not look that bad but I did get a little gunk from around the throttle plate. I also removed and inpected the pedal position sensor, and from the looks of it it would be a slim chance that this is the problem ...

I'm not sure if you've found the problem yet but I wanted to share what I leared about the pedal position sensor. If the PPS code is valid it is much more likely that it is either a wire/harness issue or a resistance to ground issue. I disassembled my PPS last week because I had a similar surge ...
