I had a similar problem with not starting and intermittent cutout on my 850 (both the 850 and S40 have a white block engine). Turned out to be the cm position sensor first time and crank position sensor second time... Sounds like your issue, engine cranks but does not fire. so if the crank position ...

Lee,

Just gone Midnight here, snuck outside, checked leads and sure enough, 1 and 2 swapped.

Started and idled, may be a little rough, will run it up and go for a blat in the morning.
