Yeah, Vadis doesn't say anything about the column but after trying to remove mine, it only comes about half way out before it hits the column. I don't think there's any way to get it out by forcing it unless you bend it in half...

I think you'll find your mechanic is probably correct. There is an actuator but it's part of the lock assembly and you have to replace the whole unit. Same with the rear door.

It shouldn't since the position bulb is in the rear but disconnect the fogs and see. Hope you're running the fogs off a relay and not directly off the headlight wiring....

You're right on the switch, it comes out pretty easy when you release the tab on the top. Here's a pic.

Depends on the model and year as to how easy it is. On my 2000 S80, you have to remove the steering column to get the core out which is a major PITA.

I would bet it's the core and not just the o-rings if you have a lot of coolant on the passenger side but maybe you'll get really lucky...
