Re the ETM needing to be recognised, with the XeMODex ETM, it's "plug n play" (or rather not in my case !) But the ETM (this one) shouldn't need any software from the dealer...and as I guess they have sold these ETM's before, the first time it needed to go to a dealer for software, it woul...

It is the "off the shelf" one from XeMODeX (with preloaded software). You "exchange" your ETM for their ETM.
