Re: Steering rack pinion seal
Tried the quick fix with stop leak on my 99 V70Xc, ended up dumping the whole contents on the ground a week later. Time to pull the rack and repair. Followed the great tutorial found at VolvoSpeed, but discovered a few tricks. 1. With the jack supporting the transmission instead of the rear of the e...

Re: Lost part of a piston - Pull the engine to replace?
recently broke head bolt on my burnt valve adventure. Soaked with PB blaster, placed bolt atop broken piece and hit with 2 lb hammer several times. Then used Snap-on left handed drill bit and it backed right out. I was stressed out the whole time worrying I would not get it and have to pull the bloc...

So, finished head reconditioning after burnt exhaust valve. 99 V70 XC, 152,000 miles. I consider myself a fairly competent mechanic, got everything together, started car and ARRGH, exhaust leak! Cooled her down, figured I missed a couple bolts. Rechecked, and re-torqued. Started again and still leak...

Re: Camshaft seal question
It's in the cover with the cam sensor pickup rotor sticking out into camshaft position sensor. Essentially same length as intake cam, arranged with slots for locking tool (after sensorrotor is removed). Had no oil leakage, but there is machined area for a seal, wondered why one was not in place.

Camshaft seal question
Finishing up cylinder head rebuild after burnt valve. Car is 1999 V70XC, 2.4 turbo. When I pulled off upper valve cover, there was not a seal on the intake cam free end (behind plastic plug, drivers side) and the cylinder head gasket kit from FCP does not have a seal for this end. Am I missing anyth...

Re: What causes a valve to "burn"?
Update to my post 6/30/12 on burnt valve in 99 V70 XC: Bought car in Dec 2011 with 142000 miles 4th owner, woman owned by by all prior owners (Carfax, scary huh!) Appears regular maintenance performed (stickers on air filter box and cabin filter with mileage due dates, paint pen marks on cam gears a...

Re: What causes a valve to "burn"?
Just finished pulling the head on my 99 V70 XC, burnt/chipped valve on NR 2 cylinder. Lost power, running rough, checked compression (after coil, etc) and got 30 lbs. Did leak down and decided it was the valve. 6 hours later, head is on the bench. Still have to pull all other valves to see what I'm ...
