Re: 1998 V70R - troubleshooting ⬆ torque converter lockup failure ⬆️ (a long-term minor problem)
Hey! For a P0740, I'd say it's most likely a solenoid problem - those are at least the thingies that go most frequently. Luckily, they can be replaced from outside the transmission. You should get the car's codes scanned by something that reads Volvo specific codes, but you could also try to replac...

1998 V70R - troubleshooting ⬆ torque converter lockup failure ⬆️ (a long-term minor problem)
I am tired of the blinking arrow. The issue is thus: when starting from a blank slate, all codes reset, if I cruise at ~56 miles per hour or more and the road begins to be even slightly uphill, there's a 75% chance the torque converter slips and unlocks, throwing (if I remember right) a P0740 code f...

Re: Near emergency: No start with 4 cylinder misfire on 1998 V70R, in wildfire danger area Topic is solved
Couldn't get the plugs out, but I charged the battery off the neighbors' generator, pulled the injector fuse, cranked it for quite a while in stints, and when I put the fuse back in and started it, it roared to life with a clatter and a cloud of smoke. It's idling smoothly now. THANK YOU!!

It worked yesterday, when I moved it between parking spaces, and all days before that, with no obvious issues. Missed that. Look for “ lawn mower syndrome” here and read those threads!!! thank you - the distributor seems a bit difficult to get to. I've asked folks on Nextdoor if they have a spark p...

1998 V70R Crank, no Start - IMPENDING WILDFIRES [LAWN MOWER SYNDROME] Topic is solved
I live in Marin County, CA, which is currently under a countywide blackout to prevent PG&E's faulty equipment from causing more fires; no mechanics are open. There's a massive wildfire burning to the north, with evacuations to the Marin County line. I just found that my car (which has previously alw...

Re: 1998 V70R: replacing hydraulic tensioner with mechanical?
I'm thinking less about the cost of the tensioner and more about the extended interval for the whole setup, even if I have to change the mechanical one every time. The less work the better.

1998 V70R: replacing hydraulic tensioner with mechanical?
My car needs the timing belt changed; it's got a hydraulic tensioner installed currently. I'd like to be able to take advantage of the longer interval in the future, if that's possible. Does a mechanical tensioner just bolt right up in place of the hydraulic one, or are there other differences that ...

Is my axle done for? (1998 V70R)
I noticed a while back that my car shudders above 80 mph when I don't remember it doing that before. Now, it's begun shuddering while going around 50-55 as well, whether accelerating through it or cruising. I'm half done rotating my tires and discovered this: [youtube]https://youtu.be/iED3b6fmMwg[/y...

Re: 1998 V70R - brief stumble during acceleration, blinking CEL, P0116 and P0302
Added $10 worth of gas. No issues during a short drive, but it remains to be seen if they're gone forever. Now the question is: which engineer did they have to check out of the insane asylum to design the fuel system on this thing? Edit: http://i.imgur.com/IOmO633.jpg I feel like I'm looking at some...
