Re: 1986 740 GLE B230F Ignition Timing Issue
The ECU sets the timing. The slots are just there to set the #1 terminal at TDC. Once set the distributor does not need adjustments. If you do it that way the ECU will "Correct it" right away, nullifying the work. And perhaps queering the deal.

Volvo says five times. Why fuss? 30 bucks. Oil them first.

Re: 1992/740/220K/HeadGasketRepair-SomeNittyGritty
You can reuse the headbolts, according to Volvo, up to five times. Which is rather creepy. Why would any B230 be rebuilt five times? Are they bragging or what?

Re: USE OEM ONLY for these:
Thee is no winning this argument Gentlefolk. Some people are zealots, some are Restorers, some are utilitarian. (Some are Unitarian..look in their parking lot. Volvos everywhere!) THERE IS NO IDEAL ANSWER . There's just whatever you like. I think the assumption is that OEM parts are the best availab...

740 bent timing belt tensioner
After replacing the head (gasket, water pump, timing belt, tensioner belts) with a rebuilt head it would not start, cecked the belt, found it two notches off, I slacked the tensioner, reseated the belt, rolled the crank over. set the tensioner to torque, buttoned it up. It would not start. Belt had ...

Re: 1990 Volvo 740 GL will not start
If it starts with spray, it's fuel. Fuel pressure regulator on the front of the fuel rail, Pumps, that evil relay, OR a stuck idle air control valve (Under the intake manifold, a cylinder with black hoses and press release connector on the rear) Pinch connector (practice this on something accesible)...

Re: 1990 volvo 740 GL wont start!
I would NOW suspect the ignition switch itself, as it should NOT start when you stop turning the key. Something is worn out of alignment. It is on the steering column behind the key plate. Remove ground on battery, two screws on the cover, unplug, replace $70.00

Re: Engine refuses to start
Timing marks are meaningless IF the crank pulley has shifted. Pull the #1 spark plug and make sure the piston is at TDC. I once assembled the engine and was 180 degrees off, but #1 was at TDC. Dern. CAn't see this from the outside. Had to take off the valve cover and look at the #1 cam settings (upw...

Volvos will not start unless there is oil pressure. Check the oil
