my thoughts are that if your P2 XC had a 120A and basically all the XC's have similar equipment, I don't see why running a 120A alternator in a 140A config would matter. That's just me putting that out there. I could be completely wrong.

I just called volvo again and they told me it was a 140A according to the VIN. Would I be in too much trouble using a potential 120A unit?

I'm not sure if my car does have a 160A unit or not. I was asked by volvo which one I thought it could be so I chose the highest of the 3. Hopefully mine is a lower amperage unit. How can you tell what amperage it has?

I just recently acquired the same smell and I personally believe it to be a partial leaking heater core. The smell is sweet like that of coolant so that is where I would start looking. check for signs of fluids on the floorboard/carpet areas.
