You need the ETM from the donor car or have your ETM matched to ECM network config. No other way really. After some extensive reading in the vadis last night, I came to that conclusion as well. Here is some additional info: I think the ETM could be specific to the two cars. So far the electronics from each car has not worked with the others ETM.
