2001 S60 Surging after ETM and other service
Pls how did you fix yours. I'm having exact same issues. With new xemodex etm, maf, and spark plugs I'm running out of options.

I've been switching the electrical units of two identical 2002 base model S60s. I found that the ETM units would only work with their respective ECUs. When they were mixed, I experienced the surging that you describe, and eventually the engine goes into some sort of limp mode where two of the cylinders weren't firing. When that happened, all I had to do was switch the ETMs their original ECU partners, and then the engines ran perfectly. My conclusion is that addressing of the ETM on the CAN BUS is unique and the ECU must be programmed to accept it. Furthermore, in switching ETMs on two 2001 turboed models, there was no problem. I asked a local Volvo independent mechanic and he said that at some time during the 2001 year the ETMs were upgraded to the newer design. Mine must have been from the older design.

!999 2000 2001 Magnetti Morelli ETMs which are swappable.
I think 2002 on you need to program. Im not sure if the change was done on the US model year, but experts here will know.

2002 MY S60 and V70 for the base cars still retained the Magnetti Marelli ETM. 2002 TURBOS had a Bosch.
The 2001 and 2002 ETMs fitted to base S60s and V70s actually run a different part number to other cars of 36001821 or 86443345 or 8644344. The new (rebuilt) number is 36050564.
The marrying is not between ECU and ETM. It's between program versioms that are not compatible with each other. If you connect Vida/Dice to car you can read Network program versions under ETM module.
There will be different SW numbers between these 2 ETMs. You can purchase Dice and have doublebug (MVS member) clone the ETM of your choice over the internet or have a dealer do the same (actually dealer won't clone they just update CANBUS to make modules compatible)
I'm not XeModex but I have been repairing and programming ETMs for 3 years in Australia : http://www.precisioncarmodules.com

Sorry I'm late. Ok, I originally did timing belt and PCV service like 4years ago but I didn't replace the cam seals because it didn't come across my mind. So after like 3 years I noticed a little oil inside my spark plug area and didn't take it serious because it was very negligible I thought. Fast forward to 3 weeks ago I was coming back from a 6 hr road trip and my no oil pressure light came on. I pulled over and my God I had oil sprayed all over the road and car. Further digging I noticed my intake cam seal failed and blew out completely. About $600 later and a new trimming with new seal everything seemed fine until I got home and 2 weeks later car started throwing p0014 cam on exhaust timing B is over advanced. Then one week later my idle problem became worse. It threw codes from p1171 to p237 on occasion but after a new Maf sensor and xemodex elm those went away. So I'm just battling the p0014 and rough idle when engine is warm. And I've checked the timing marks and it seems dead on. So pls help. I'm in my last year of college and money is tight. Never had an issue with the car till now. I currently have 167000 miles bought it at 118000 miles ago.abscate wrote:Old thread alert, starting new thread

I think you have variable timing on the exhaust side on this car. The solenoid can gum up or the connections can get dirty (especially if it oiled up) which will trip that code.
Solution is clean CVVT solenoid or new/Pick-b-pull one

CVVT is on intake side ONLY on B5244S engines. Same deal as exhaust side just opposite.
Is this a turbo car as I was answering about the base S60 above??
Recheck those timing marks as with all the oil on the belt area there's a good chance it may have slipped a cog or two.
And yeah CVVT is always a bugbear and causes P0014 code if failing.

I have cleaned and applied 12v and it responded fine. My next option is to change the oil and filter or reset the VVT but I don't know how to do that.abscate wrote:I think you have variable timing on the exhaust side on this car. Yes the vvT is on the exhaust side. And it's also turbo.
