Keep that car! It's a really nice one if I recall. But you said you would, only I couldn't agree more. You were do for a head gasket (sooner than later) anyway. Ironically i put a new head gasket on it about 15k miles ago when I burned a few valves. Here’s another question for y’all: is it possible...

Hahaha I got a laugh out of that one. I have a special love for this car as I’m sure most of you do for yours. Let’s just say I won’t be getting rid of it any time soon. It will ride again, better and faster.

Re: 1996 850 2.3T blown #2 Rod

It is pretty obvious there was a defect in the lower end. How do you lay that fault on the friend that used it ... rationally? I would not overlook the fact that lower end could of went when I was driving it. I don't do irrational blame. I definitely feel that it probably would have happened if I w...

Re: 1996 850 2.3T blown #2 Rod

Well, unfortunately I don’t have a garage or driveway; my house was built before the automobile existed, so any work I do has to be done on the street. As much as I’d love to dive in and explore the cause of the damage, I can only do so much on my tiny sidewalk (plus the weather here is still pretty...

Re: Ever seen an oil pan hole like this?

Okay, it was an easy diagnosis; removed plugs, put a long screwdriver in each hole while cranking the shaft. Each piston went up and down... except number 2 :? I did find this resting on top of the subframe, though: ChunkOuter.jpg ChunkInner.jpg Now I'm no CSI metallurgist, mind you, but it is alumi...

Re: Ever seen an oil pan hole like this?

All is good y'all, all is good...today once it warms up a bit (still about 30 degrees here in Western PA) I plan on checking the travel of each piston. IF that test looks good, THEN I'll try a compression test. IF that looks good, THEN I'll try the JB Weld as a temporary fix to get some oil in the m...

Re: Ever seen an oil pan hole like this?

I mean, you might be lucky... but if it lost oil then "died on the way home", I seriously doubt the car just shut itself off without some real damage being done. The car doesn't know if it has oil in it or not. The low pressure light is only an indicator. Yeah, I'm not holding my breath o...

Re: Ever seen an oil pan hole like this?

Thanks for the input folks, it helps a lot. I stopped by my Volvo tech today and he had never seen anything like that in his 13 years of fixing Volvos, so I guess I feel special lol. He also recommended the JB Weld "temporary" fix, to first see if it runs OK. If not, then it's onto bigger ...

1996 850 2.3T blown #2 Rod at 208k

Hi guys, it's been a long time since my last visit but I've gotten around to doing some more work on the 96 Platinum 850 turbo 2.3 wagon, 208k miles. Long story short, a friend had borrowed it for a few months and he called to say it had died on his way home and there was no oil on the dipstick. Ugh...

Re: Does this look right to you?

That's fantastic, thank you! I probably will be able to find it locally knowing that.
