1999 Volvo S80; Head Gasket Question

Hello Fellow Volvo Amigos, Long story short, my dumba$$ broke the coolant pump pipe bolt that runs into the back of the cylinder head. My question is whether I need to purchase another head gasket. I've torqued down the cylinder head (40nm) but didn't tighten it to the angle (130 degrees). What I'm ...

Re: 1999 Volvo S80; Oil Burning in Cylinders

SuperHerman -- Thank you for the added input. I will be doing everything you said, though the only thing I feel I might have a bit of trouble with is checking to see how the block is still in its correct shape.. how would I go about doing something like that? Rick -- "Don't forget a new set of head ...

Re: 1999 Volvo S80; Oil Burning in Cylinders

Will do. Tomorrow I'll be taking off the crankcase to clean it out and checking to see which hoses need replacing before I go ordering parts. As for the liquid gasket, is that something I can buy from a local auto parts store or is it something I need to order online? I've done some researching and ...

Re: 1999 Volvo S80; Oil Burning in Cylinders

Rick -- That indentation you saw was actually on the cam cover, I was thinking since I'm not trying to invest to much money into this that could heat it up just a bit then flatten it, sand it so its smooth, then rethread it with a tap and dye (I figured that they wouldn't do much more than that). Th...

Re: 1999 Volvo S80; Oil Burning in Cylinders

I just got done taking off the breather box, which I believe is the original since the plastic was so brittle it broke after I took the bolt out and pulled it away from the engine. I think you may have hit the nail on the head Rick, the two upper hoses were fairly clear but the lower one connecting ...

Re: 1999 Volvo S80; Oil Burning in Cylinders

The darker spots were definitely oil, the rest I believe was a mixture of soot and oil but it's difficult to tell. How much would there need to be for it to point to the PCV?

Re: 1999 Volvo S80; Oil Burning in Cylinders

So I stuck some paper towels up the tailpipe and did pick up some oil. Not sure how much you were looking for but it wasn't all that much, though I couldn't get the paper towels that far back into the pipe. As for the PCV, I'll take off the breather box tomorrow to check and see if it's clogged or m...

Re: 1999 Volvo S80; Oil Burning in Cylinders

Almost forgot to mention the codes it was throwing, P0030, P0300, P1330. Also, I did take these photos with my phone so if you need higher quality just say the word.

1999 Volvo S80; Oil Burning in Cylinders

Hello Volvo Enthusiasts, I recently bought a 1999 Volvo S80 2.9L Non-Turbo that supposedly had a blown head gasket. I knew I was taking a gamble but for the price & mileage ($500 with 147k), it was just too good to pass up. I figured that even if I couldn't get it running I could still sell it for p...
