Thanks Bill! I need to drive now because my husband and I live in a rural place with two young kids, and he works all the time. I need to get out and about! One thing that I dig after reading here is how good our year seems to be, a 1984 740 DL, seems most of the problems with volvos begin just year...

The Internet is just amazing for learning about so many things. I've answered my own questions with googling, at least so far. I hope to learn to fix this myself, and I'm sure I'll be back here for further help soon.

Ah...it's called dieseling. So many things that can cause it though *sigh* What I can't figure out if it's a serious thing or not. I'll start off with putting only high quality gas in for a week and see if that helps. Could the broken exhaust pipe make things too hot in there and be making this worse?
