Automatic, 247,000 kms

This is my first car, I'm learning to drive at an older age and believe it or not, an old Volvo wagon was exactly what I wanted, and I love this thing.

However, this freaks me out, and before I go spend a lot of money on repairs I'm hoping some of you can shed some light on what you think the problem may be.

Car runs well, then when we shut it off it shakes and bucks and bangs, sometimes for a few seconds, sometimes just a few shakes or so.

The only thing that I can tell is wrong with the car at the moment is that one of the hoses is broken, leading to the exhaust, when I look under the hood. I know little about cars, some people have told me that it's a carbon build up thing and harmless? A relative told me her grandfather's old VW rabbit used to do the same thing and she thought it was common in older cars.

Any ideas?

Now off to shop for a manual for this thing. Thanks for your time, readers 8)

Ah...it's called dieseling.

So many things that can cause it though *sigh*

What I can't figure out if it's a serious thing or not. I'll start off with putting only high quality gas in for a week and see if that helps.

Could the broken exhaust pipe make things too hot in there and be making this worse?

The Internet is just amazing for learning about so many things. I've answered my own questions with googling, at least so far. I hope to learn to fix this myself, and I'm sure I'll be back here for further help soon.

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site even if we can't help this time.

It is good to hear that you have taken the plunge and started driving "at an older age". It is said that wisdom comes with age. That must be true because you chose Volvo!!

If you do have problems please ask.

Thanks Bill! I need to drive now because my husband and I live in a rural place with two young kids, and he works all the time. I need to get out and about!

One thing that I dig after reading here is how good our year seems to be, a 1984 740 DL, seems most of the problems with volvos begin just years after this, but few problems with the older ones?

Also, though I'm the wife in the family, my husband is just not a handy kinda guy, it's ME who wants to learn how to fix this thing, I've ordered a manual and I like learning new things, solving puzzles and getting my hands dirty so I look forward to learning how to fix this problem. The only setback I can see is having problems actually lifting anything heavy, but he'll help with that if need be. Seems I picked the right kind of simple old car if I want to learn how cars work, mechanically.

Thank you again for the welcome, I'm sure I'll be posting again soon!
