When I did some work on my '09 after I first bought it, I found sticky syrup like residue inside the shift console. Apparently the PO had sweet sodas slopping over from the cupholders draining into the center console. It could be an aroma source in your case.

Ambient temperature does not cause leaks unless the heat rises to the point of permanently damaging a seal. In your case, it is most likely that the seal was damaged during assembly.

You might get lucky and find the connections treatable if you get in there soon enough.
