Oil all over the place

Post by Guest »

My 96 850 non-turbo is blowing oil all over the engine. Looks like it's coming from the oil filler cap. Is this a common problem and fixed with a new cap? Any help is welcome.

Very common problem. All you need is a new filler cap seal that shouldn't cost more than a couple bucks at the dealer. However, if you're having a lot of oil thrown up, that's a potential sign of a clogged PCV system and, which could cause lots of headaches down the road. Try the new seal first and if the problem continues, you may want to look into pulling the intake manifold and throwing a new oil trap on to alleviate positve crankcase pressure.

I had the exact same problem! The oil overflowed so much it got into the spark plug wells and fouled up everything. I just replaced the oil filler cap rubber seal but I think I have the added problem of too much pressure because I still see new oil around the cap. You mentioned pulling out the intake manifold and putting in a new oil trap. Do you have any references on how to do that? Is it and easy thing to do.

All help VERY much appreciated.

thanks

"Easy" is relative :) . I did it myself and have a couple pics of the process. It's one of those weekend project sort of things cause all said and done, it took me 8 or 9 hours to do it, but that included lots of screwing around/taking breaks to play GT4/eat/surf the net :D . If I just worked on it straight, it would probably take 4 hours or so from start to finish. Lemme know if you're interested in details on how to do it. There are a few bolts that are nearly impossible to see unless you know where they are before hand where they are. Not really a job I'd want to do over again, but I know that I'll have to one of these days when my starter goes bad.

Wondered if this problem is a volvo thing, my daughters 240 dl is hiccuping oil thru the oil filler hole too. Is this likely to be a PCV problem there too if not filler cap?
