oil from engine in air intake

Post by moonraker »

re:- 1995 850 se 5cyl 2.5 est - 175.000 mls

whilst trying to cure my not starting probs, I cleaned theair intake area around the throttle butterfly, the plastic hose from the air filter box had a very small amount of oil laying in the bottom of it where in joins the air intake,

Also when the car is running (idle) I can see fumes coming from the engine crankcase breather hose, these fumes are obviously coating the air intake manifold and I have cleaned the area around the butterfly valve (throttle valve) and cleaned out the two little holes drilled in the manifold.

Question:- at this fairly high mileage is it normal to have a small amount of oil collecting in the bottom of the hose, (I mean small)

and, is it normal to see fumes coming from the engine breather.

I live in england and have old english cars as well as fiat, ford etc and on some have had oil coming out of everywhere when they were very old. But they still ran perfect.

My volvo does use quite alot of oil between oil changes, maybe 2/3 litres in 3/4000 mls.

many thanks steve

I will guess that the oil seperator is clogged. It would be best to change it sooner than later as it might lead to a blown rear main seal.

It is under/behind the intake manifold which will need to be removed.
