Hi there,
I have a 1997 850 non turbo wagon, and I'm wondering what I should do about the fact that the flexible metal hose running into the airbox from the manifold is breaking every time I touch it. Would it be a problem just to remove it and leave it off for at least a while until I have time to find a replacement?
The I presume the airbox would be just drawing in air from the engine compartment. As far as I know, the flap to control air coming in to the airbox is working, though I don't know how I can prove it. It is the newer spring loaded type that is controlled from the vacuum line.
When I had the whole thing apart to replace the PCV system, the flapper was strongly held in the hot air position with the spring. I've been trusting that with the engine on there should be vacuum to it that pulls it to allow cold air intake? Does anyone know how exactly this is supposed to work?
Thanks for the advice!

Certainly in the summer you would not need the tube. In fact the door into the air box can be shut and leave only cool fresh air from the front intake.

Ok, I'll just remove the tube for now.
I couldn't figure out an easy way to make the flap stay on the cold air side in this car. (In my '95, it was pretty straightforward to wedge it open with a peg).
This newer vacuum controlled unit is quite different. Does anyone have experience with doing that mod to these newer intake flaps?
