1999 XC70 Tie Rods

I have 58.8k miles on this car and my left inner tie rod needs to be replaced. I have replaced both right and left twice so far. This seems to be a weak link in this "suv". I do not drive this car off road, nor treat it rough in any manner. The 1st time they were replaced the car was under warranty; the 2nd time I had to pay out of pocket....$1700.00! This seems excessive to me... any suggestions. Has this been a problem for anyone else? I can turn a wrench so is it fixable by a weekend warrior?

$1700 for inner tie rods?!?!?! The only thing I can think could be causing the problem is dirt getting past the dust boots. You might want to check them out to make sure they're tight.
