O2 sensor on 96 850

Post by JohnWoo »

My 96 850 check engine light is on, and I brought it to Autozone to get
reading. They told me that O2 sensor is bad, however, there are two
type of O2 sensor parts. One is for the model with air pump and other one
w/o air pump. Mine is automatic, non-turbo. Does anybody have the information?

VOLVO B5254S engine has the air pump. You may find out your engine type plate under the hood.

Autozone diagnosed a bad zone 1 02 sensor which I replaced myself. Now how do I clear the check engine light? Will it self clear or another dealer expense.

It'll clear itself in a day or two.
Help keep MVS on the web -> click sponsors' links here on MVS when you buy from them.

Also -> Amazon link
. Click that when you go to buy something on Amazon and MVS gets a cut!

O2 sensor diagnosed bad, bank one (before Cat) repaired - check light cleared, now bank two (behind cat) 02 sensor is diagnosed as bad.....I'm thinking conspiracy theory right about now. 70k miles on car is this about the time they go?????

Yea. My front sensor went at 65k miles. It's probably coincedence that yours went so close together.

Auto Zone - Bosch Brand - has in stock front sensor (bank1) carry in stock, rear sensor (bank2) special order dont carry in stock at least in Phx area. $150 seems to be the going rate for #1, number 2 @ $120.

Hello -- I'm about to replace the front O2 sensor on my '96 850 Turbo, 113K miles. A search for the part at some Internet sites shows this information:
--------------
According to Volvo Cars of North America, Inc., in order to prevent contamination from reaching reference air, the new adapter wiring must be in- stalled for both oxygen sensors when one oxygen sensor is replaced.
---------------

The cable is only $16.24, so it's not a big deal to purchase, if it truly is needed.

Any opinions out there as to whether the cable should be replaced ? Also, if I am replacing the front O2 sensor, is it a good idea to replace the rear also, or just wait until there are some other indications ?

Is a special tool required for removing/replacing the front O2 Sensor ? On eBay, there is such a tool for sale, around $10.

I have owned and driven Volvos since 1970. I am enjoying my 850... very different from all the in-line Fours that I have owned in the past.

Thank you !

Sounds like you got your monies worth with that 02 sensor. If you have an Auto Zone near you pick up both from and rear sensors. They also have a tool loaner program with a special socket for the 02 sensor (Free).

I'm not sure what you meant by the "new adapter wiring" but the sensors came with wiring harness attached. Just a bit hard to unlock the plastic locking piece. (remember pull the red latch to the side and the piece slides right out).

I would advise changing both sensors. Murphy's Law did me in. No sooner had I changed the front sensor and reset the light, the rear one failed and the check light popped on as I sat in the State Emissions station. (another fail and 27 bucks later) I installed the second and had no problems.

Good luck if you havent completed the job already.
