Another 94 850T won't start

Post by Alisa »

I see there are a number of similar complaints. Here are the specifics on mine. I have a 94 Volvo 850 Turbo Wagon. It has 99K miles and I'm the second owner. I've had the cooling system replaced, as well as the timing belt and the rear main seal. Despite the high maint. cost, I love the car. The downside is that I am a park ranger in the middle of nowhere--it's 250 miles to the nearest dealer.

I came back from a 250 mile road trip last weekend. The car ran great. But, after a cold night, it refused to start. I thought it would be OK when the weather was warmer. It isn't. The dash lights come on and the engine cranks. It acts like it's flooded, and I've tried starting it with and without pushing the accelerator. Sometimes it sounds like it almost starts, but it doesn't. After I've tried, it smells like gas.

From these messages, it sounds like it could be a fuel pump. I am thinking of buying a fuel pump and fuel filter, but there's no way I can afford to tow it to a dealer. Are those repairs that a competent non-Volvo mechanic can attempt? Any other ideas? Anything else I should replace at the same time? The nearest mechanic is 40 miles away so it would be great if I could get it started instead of having it towed.

I really appreciate any help you can provide. Thanks. Alisa
