Bad news.Your options are to rebuild the head or get used one.You will need also a set of gaskets and reputable timing belt kit with water pump.
That will be costly even if you do repair yourself.Maybe it's time for a newer or other Volvo.

Seized water pump after only 45k...it must be a total junk and "no name" brand.

Fortunately, OP lives in an area with a large Volvo population, another motor may be the quick and cost-effective solution. Your Platinum is an LPT car, right? so a 96-98 LPT motor isn't a 350 chevy, but they are out there. If you have a Platinum in good shape, a motor swap might make economic sense. Best of luck however it goes for you.

oops-edit. So I see they were HPT, so any turbo, T-5, or R from 95-08 should be a candidate I believe.
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

Re Water Pump, use only:
1. Aisin (which is OEM)
2. HEPU also good.

But I'd stick to Aisin, brand matters.

I have seen aftermarket water pumps fail in less than 20,000 miles. So sad.

I'd find a used engine and drop it in.

You better get on finding the brand of that water pump... I think everyone wants to know if it failed at just 45k miles. I hope it isn't a Hepu.
All this timing belt talk the past few days is really making me want to replace mine soon, even though it looks good. I don't trust the PO's mechanic to use good parts.

I have the water pump out. It looks like the bushing blew up and allowed the shaft to tip a bit. The blades gouged into the pump housing, got wedged, and sheared some teeth off of the timing belt. If I shake the water pump, it rattles - pieces of the bushing are still in the housing.

I'm of the mind that the bushing/bearing was packed with grease, and that grease ended up in my coolant. It also flung out all around the inside of my timing belt cover.

I'm unable to locate the invoice, so I don't know who makes it - it was 4 years ago and we've moved since then. The water pump doesn't have any identifying brand on it. On the housing, it says '1D6P', and on the end of the shaft it says "12 12 4 WR".

Bummer...we feel your pain. It is indeed heart-wrenching to hear this happen to another old car.

Beware that either TB tensioner or idler pulley can wear, allowing the TB to slide off. I caught mine before this happened thank God. You can search through my back posts for the photos. It was an INA bearing too. OEM. It was Tango Uniform before 70,000mi.

Might be a good idea to do at least a yearly inspection by removing the TB cover and having a look with a bright light.
