2000 V70 SE - Is there a Cargo cover?

A thought has occurred to me... how come nobody has made a 3D model of a template that can be 3D printed? I am now heavily considering trying my hand at this since I have the skill set for it. Would be a fun project on top of being helpful.

This is the only photo I could find of the templates, gives me at least some amount of visual reference.

Now that I have returned from vacation, I managed to get hold of my buddy who has the templates. He dropped them off yesterday briefly so I could look at them. I will chase him to get the job done as it should take no more than 10 minutes of access to his car.

Once that is done, as soon as Canada Post decides with the employees if they want to keep their business and jobs and return to work I can send the originals to you so you can see about making a 3D copy. Just did a similar thing with the brackets for the wagon rear hatch spoiler mounts with another MVS member.

Just so you can see how it works:

The little tabs on the top end in this picture align with the trim edge when the cover for the rear seat belt is removed. Then drill 2 holes using the template on either side and good to go. There is a LH and RH template as per your picture.

This is our own car, these work fine and were done using measurements from the cover and a paper template. Slowly increasing the hole size until the cover locating pins fit snuggly.

Are the holes finished in some way ? Grommet etc ? I've never seen the factory set up.

That can be done for sure, my goal with the help and generosity of Neil is to make a 3D model that can be used to print templates so in future hunting down and shipping around templates won't be an issue for anyone that wants a template. But yeah, one could make rough measurements and make cuts, would probably work out just fine.

I don't think they are, to my knowledge the holes were just drilled out and left that way, the posts on the cargo cover that go into those holes have rubber caps on them. Until Neil posted his pictures here there haven't been any good photos of those holes anywhere I've looked.

Now what you need is 3D printed push in grommets similar to the door lock pulls. That would look clean.

That would look nice, I wonder if just using a deburring tool might smoothen out the edges enough to make it clean.

Put a piece of paper inthe corner and lined up on the window, folded down, marked holes.

I finally got around to installing the cargo cover! I want to again give a big thanks to RobertDIY for repairing and selling me one of his cargo covers as well as Neil (scot850) for sourcing and sending me the templates he had, which has been very helpful.

The templates require those pieces of trim with the grilles to be removed as the templates hook onto the trim edge underneath it. Be careful removing them as they have become very brittle, I ended up accidentally snapping the drivers side one in half. I used the method Neil discussed with me about using masking tape and a marker to mark the diameter of the holes and the rough center point using the template. I used a step bit to get the holes as close to 1/2 inch as possible. I then used a 1/2 inch drill bit to clean up the holes and get them accurate.

The problem I ran into is that the rubber feet on the cover did not fit in the holes. What I think happened is that over the years the rubber has swelled a bit and became dimensionally larger as a result. The step bits I bought could not go larger than 1/2 inch before bottoming out on the metal panel behind the trim.

Today I drilled out the holes with a wider step bit from work. This allowed the rearmost feet to go in but the forwardmost feet (located on the curve) still would not go in. It appeared that the holes were too close together. What I ended up doing was drilling out the forward holes even wider with the step bit until the cover could go in all the way. It looks a bit uglier like that now but whatever, the trim was already cracked and broken, as long as it works.

The car looks so much more complete to me now, very happy with it. Just gotta vacuum out the shavings and clean the cover up a bit.


Now it's on to creating a 3D model of the templates for others to use in the future. I'm currently working out a way to 3D scan the parts if possible. Otherwise I'll just make something dimensionally similar. Will make a separate thread for that when the time comes.
