Key should be turned from off position to position II 5 times within 10 seconds on an 850 and then push any button. You should see the red light in the center of the dash light up or blink (or something). Car doors should all be closed...not locked. At least this is my understanding of the process. After you push a button on the first one, you have about 5 seconds to push a button on the second one and then a third remote. You have to "reprogram" all at the same time. If you don't then the original one (that worked before you started the programming sequence) won't work anymore. Actually, this is because you're programming the car to the remotes. You can do up to 3 remotes for our cars.

I too just started having this problem with my 1999 V70 XC. Key and key fob will lock the car but not set the alarm. The signals do not flash when locking, and the dash top light does not blink. The alarm will sound and the lights will flash when using the panic button. Any ideas?

topodesk,
The '99 and newer Volvo's are different as to how to set the key fobs...they have to be done at the dealer. But anyway, check your hood latch. That seemed to be the problem for dkretzer as he solved his own issue- documented in a thread just below this one.

Hi everyone,

Just a note on the reprogramming of remotes on all Australian Volvo models from 1993-1998. The remote systems fitted to these vehicles is NOT a geniuine Volvo system! The remote locking systems were fitted locally in Australia by Anti-Theft Australia and should come "pre-programmed" from the dealer. I have had to code remotes to a number of the Anti-theft systems and the remotes supplied are nowhere near the correct frequency for the vehicle. Should you need to cade a remote to one of these systems, split the remote casing, and you should notice a blue circular device with a Phillips head slot in the top, simply use this to tune the remote.

There was another system also fitted to some early S70's which is a Mongoose system, however these are exceptionally rare.

Please note that this information is for AUSTRALIAN MODELS ONLY! I put this information here after an irrate customer abused me the other day after reading this section!

Good luck, and happy motoring!

hi there, just a thought are you pressing the remote for long enough, my alarm won't work either unless it deadlocks, which means, after i press the lock, i wait a second then press again, when you hear it deadlock the alarm automatically comes on, at least it does on mine (95 - 850) hope this has helped you, regards - pete.

I too bought a replacement key remote. I have put a new battery in it, but have no way to know if it works.

In any cases, I fliped the ignition 5 times and the little light on the dash started flashing. Unfortunately, I pushed the lock button and nothing happened. Eventually the little light stops flashing but the car is not programmed.

I notice most eBay key fobs say they are for 93-96 volvos. Is there a difference with the 97 850? The fact that the light flashes when I turn the key five times seems promising, but is there something about the 97 that would make it not programable this way?

Should I try buying another key remote, or even trying to get a new sensor for the dash? Is there anyway other than going to a dealer to see if the remote is actually working?

Thanks,

Based on advices founded at this forum I reprogram my remote fob /method of 5 on/off ignition turns/,and just want to let you know guys that it works !
So thank you!
My remote stoped working so I thought that becuase of batteries but it wasn't this . I called dealer they told me that 125 cad is fob and 50 cad programing.
Than I visited this web and found helpfull hints and I just simply tried to reprogram my unfunctional old fob and problem is solved...old fob start working !
Looks like the fobs could be simply dissprogram -confused by other interferences so based on this I would advice try to reprogram firs your old fob and than only if old not working try to buy a new one !
This was my case .
take care guys
Daniel

Today I washed and dried my remote for my 1994 Volvo 850 sedan. It is now very clean, but doesn't work.

I just tried the procedure for reprogramming that I found online (I tried it with the one I washed and the other one which stopped working a few years back). When I got in the car, locked the doors, and turned the key to position II (accessories on) five times and then left it on, the doors would unlock about 25% of the time and do nothing the rest of the time. I read online that the little red alarm light on the dashboard is supposed to flash, but it never does on my car, even tho the red light flashes nicely if I lock my car with the key (which activates the alarm.)

Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks, Charlie

I think you might have fubarred your FOB. Just for kicks, check your battery voltage in it. You might be in for a new one. I went swimming with mine last summer by accident, but the rubber gasket in it kept water out and it worked fine...what a surprise and a relief. I was out of town with my son when I stupidly did this.
