The front is. The rear has a totally different setup on XCs with no delta link setup and self-leveling Nivomat shocks.BKM98 S70 T5 wrote:Is the V70 XC the same thing as the V70 AWD in 98? If it is you can also use the Gabriel's. The fronts and rears seem to be the same for all models in 98. It it easy at that point to replace front or rear and you won't need any of usazv70 wrote:If ya want to come up to Kingman AZ I am about to do the spring seats and struts on our 98 v70xc..

I am getting ready to bite the bullet and buy the struts for this project.
I would like you guys opinion though. The noise I have is a pinging or hammering sound at low speeds. Metal on metal. Turning one way or another doesn't seem to make a difference. Neither does engine load or braking. Does that still sound like a strut mount? The passenger side strut mount is loose so it will need to be replaced either way....

As far as the metal on metal noise, I was experiencing that as well. I changed out the lower right engine mount (avatar photo) and found that to be the source of that noise, as well as hammering feeling over bumps. My passengers upper strut mount/spring seat needs replacing as well, but the engine mount was a great start. It is also a pretty simple procedure. I've seen some good writeups.azv70 wrote:I am getting ready to bite the bullet and buy the struts for this project.

So you guys think it is the motor mount vs the strut mount? There really is no certain condition that induces the noise. At low speeds it hammers. It gets worse till 25+ and then goes away. I really don't think it goes away it just changes to a less annoying noise....I know I need the upper rear motor mount. I suspect that contributes to the hammering if it's not the cause.
Thanks for your help guys.
Sorry for the hi jack.

Both MAY be an issue, but the strut mount is definitely bad.
As far as replacing struts - how does it ride? Does it feel like it stumbles over bumps and floats a lot on the highway? If not, the struts are probably OK - but you're removing the entire thing anyway. So - if you have the money - go for replacing both of them, as you'll need an alignment anyway!
My strut mount was more of a knocking/tapping noise at low speed.

Yes, and like I said, I know I have a bad spring seat/strut mount. But the lower right engine mount colapses on itself. It won't matter at what speed, there will be metal to metal contact over bumps of any degree.
I have added enlarged images .
Once again, Good luck.

Is that an OE Volvo mount? It looks real close where as mine from FCP looked so different that until it was installed it didn't look even close.Ben850 wrote:Yes, and like I said, I know I have a bad spring seat/strut mount. EDIT:
WOW, Perfect description for a totally collapsed engine mount!azv70 wrote:At low speeds it hammers. It gets worse till 25+ and then goes away.

I think I got that from IPD last summer. I don't recall if it was OEM, but it was designated for a '93 850 and looks to be an exact duplicate. I've seen them look different, but I was pleased to see the part I recieved looked the same.
