P80 Oil dipstick lengths 1271921 1271920 9497557

Post by jamesconnelly1 »

I have a broken dipstick handle. The part number on it is 1271921. I understand that this part number can still be of different lengths. FCP say that my part number is 9497557. What gives?....I want to replace the the stick...not tube and stick.
I have 98 XC (2.43)

Any help would be appreciated

James

the original dipstick is apparently no longer available from volvo. you can either try to find a used one from a junkyard or upgrade to a new dipstick+dipstick tube.

I have not yet had to deal with a broken dipstick but from what I read you can take the old one to the stealership and they will match it for length with the original.

My dipstick broke in the same place as yours last year- I read that different ones (same part number) were of different lengths and you would have to buy the tube too. I, like you, didn't want to do that, so I went to my local dealer and asked them to bring out all of their 850 and S/V/XC/C70 (first generation) dipsticks. If found one for a '96 850 that was a perfect match (different part number) and bought it for $15. Maybe this will work for you too? Good luck!

you could just switch it out next oil change
put in 6 qts and then mark with your dremel on the new stick where full is.
this is what i'm going to do with the broken stick for my 95 850 at 158K. If the fill tube is not leaking, why bother to fix it?

My original dipstick (PN 1271921, prob replaced by 9497557) just broke.

I don't want to tube, so I guess if I buy the "new-design" dipstick, I have to mark it myself???

Any update?

I went to the dealer and had them pull every dipstick from '93 on up and matched mine up that way for my S70, but since then mine has broken again- using pliers right now to get it out...I need another one!! I don't know if the dealer is as well stocked now as they were several years ago.

Are you saying 1271920 (for 850) is the same as 1271921 (1998 V70)?

Update,

Thanks to MadeinJapan, I know that 1271921 is no longer available, you have to buy the new dipstick and new housing.

So I took my chance and ordered 1271920, guess what, the label says 1271920 but the dipstick clearly has 1271921 engraved on it!

So technically speaking the PN is identical to my cracked old dipstick.
Volvo somehow sneaks it in (using 1271921 for 1271920).

However, there is a slight difference in length, if you look at the Min. mark, it is about 5mm in length difference.

In the big scheme of things, it makes no difference anyway. Just order 1271920 and you will be fine. Just keep oil level near the Max mark.
