That My Volvo 850 GLT 1997 has an Audi engine inside?
A friend of mine (former car mechanic) came to see the car yesterday, and declared that the engine is an Audi one  .
He said that Audi makes 5 cyl. engines (which does not mean that because of that the engine in the Volvo is an Audi one, to me at least).
He also stated that Volvo does not produce engines since the 144 model (about 1967).
What do you think about that?

Somewhat. The Volvo 5-cylinder engine was designed in 1992 in conjecture with Porsche, which VW AG owns a part of, and the same design has been used ever since in almost every model at one point or another across Volvo's lineup to this day, and some European Fords (Focus RS). The engines are all built/designed BY VOLVO at the Volvo plant in Sweden.

Old Audis (I believe the 100 and 200 models) used a simliar engine up until 1991, and then VW discontinued the engine and car. It was not until recently that they brought back the newly redesigned 2.5 5-cyl in the Rabbit and Jetta.

Your friend is very misinformed.

There is no relation between audi's 5 cylinder engines and the volvo whiteblock.

Porsche was only involved in the intake and exhaust tuning for the original 850 GLT with VVIS. This was a purely volvo engine design. Volvo started working on the modular alloy block engines in 1980.

It already had the sandwich style construction with aluminum block.

No its a finely tuned machine that when tuned more is a more finely tuned machine.

Honestly idc what a volvo is, all i know is my engines got 241k miles and i just now had to replace the cam seal... sides from a timing belt everything else is still volvo on the engine. which might be bad since its 241k.. and its all still original. haha. *stage 0-2 here i come*

If audi would have had any influence on our cars they would all be equipped with manual transmissions like most of their cars were. I am a huge fan of audi fives, really one of the only reasons I gave owning a 850 a shot. I will stick with volvos until I can afford a new s5 or r8 then i'm jumpin ship, so you can expect me around here for quite a few years. I owned a 91 200 turbo quattro car a few years ago and i have to say that no car I have owned comes close to the joy that car gave me, not even my yellow r. I love them both!!!

True manuals are getting harder and harder to find...they're being replaced by automatics and paddle-shift gearboxes almost everywhere. You usually have to look to the luxury brands anymore to find a manual, and even then you'd be surprised. I was extremely disappointed when I found out the Audi A4 3.2 (pretty much my dream car once I get through grad school) comes in only a stupid paddle-shift automatic, while the 2.0T has an option of coming as a manual, but the dealer says they're hard to find (like a Volvo T5 in manual, I suppose.) It just ruins the fun putting the good engines with automatic transmissions! My dad had a very hard time finding a 4 cylinder Accord in a manual, and had to end up compromising on the color because there was not a single EX on a lot in North Carolina in a manual in dark blue. An Acura TL is next to impossible to find in manual as well. I don't even think Volvo has a manual anymore in anything except a C70, which is a shame because I really like the XC60.

Our base 5 speed 850 wagon is coming up on 200k miles. The M56 transmission makes the car a joy to drive. No sunroof, no leather, no alloys. It has never let us down. I would have a hard time finding another one like it so I take good care of it.

I too take good care of my 850. I don't see why people are so hasty to get rid of their 850's and buy Audi's and such.
