How to remove MCC temperature damper control arm?

Volvo Repair Database How to remove MCC temperature damper control arm?

Anyone removed the manual climate control passenger side temperature damper arm before? My 855's MCC passenger side damper lever (that the control cable hooks on) broke off and I did not find an exploded parts diagram that shows how the arm can be pulled out without cracking open the EVAP box.

Or could someone share a MCC exploded parts diagram?

As soon as I get my PDF converter to cooperate, I'll get you what VADIS has, but I'm not really sure how helpful it will be.

Thanks for the pdfs, those show the motors controlling the dampers. I'm looking for one that actually shows how to remove the damper arm, or the entire damper assembly itself.

The hunt continues....

Sadly the only way you can get to it is by removing the dash and then taking the climate unit box apart. It is an identical procedure to changing the evaporator coil.

Give yourself a couple of days to get it done since you will likely need to repair your dash mounts as well.

I looked it up in Vadis to get you part numbers for the dampers but they have all been superseded with the entire climate unit. Part number 31101179. A junk yard might be your best bet.

Dang it! I was hoping that the damper shaft can be removed from outside the EVAP box :(

I'll definitely hit the yards to pull a EVAP box to see the inner workings and see if I can ghetto rig something up in the time being.

So, since the lever is broken off the damper arm outside the box, perhaps I can put in a self-tapping screw with threadlock, then remove the glovebox liner and manually turn the damper with the screw during each change of the seasons?

It sounds like it is worth a try, as brittle as the plastic gets I think I would drill a pilot hole even with the self tapping screw. At this point I don't think you have anything to lose.

We have a superb writeup in the database on changing the evaporator.

I know this is an old question, but it was never answered. I recently went through this, and can comment, just in case it helps someone else.

You do NOT have to take apart the whole air box. The arms snap into a square hole in the temp damper.

The arms pull out with a little bit of force, but be very careful not to apply too much, as it also easily breaks. I found that pulling on it with fingers and a light prying from a screwdriver works best.

I had one break, and I was able to get a small drill into the space and make a hole in the center of the square plug of plastic that was still stuck. I then stuck a drywall screw into it and pulled hard, and the plug came out! No damage to the rest of it.
