Hi. Okay, just been on a thread about PCT valve and went out and cleaned her out (all good), and while I had the turbo intake pipe off I just had a little feel to check how much play the turbo shaft had.
Scientific apparatus (fingers) recorded a fore/aft of around 1-2mm, and side of about 1mm.
Yes, i'm aware that there should be no play at all for a healthy assembly, but wondered if there was a serviceable tolerance anywhere. I've looked. My 740 Tic's turbo was like a sausage in a tunnel, but still went for ages till a white van driver wrote it off for me.
Thanks in advance.
Tolerances on t5 turbo shaft play.

I don't know the scientific answer to your question, but that's probably not bad for as many miles are on that thing. I'd say it's fine, unless you blow a lot of smoke or burn a lot of oil, I wouldn't worry about it having a little play.
Mine whines for a few seconds on cold mornings, but it's got 172,000 miles on it almost, so I really can't blame it.

Spin the turbo by hand to feel for any roughness or binding. If it doesn't turn freely or there is any sign of scraping on either the turbo blades or the housing the bearings are gone and the turbo needs to be replaced or rebuilt. if not dont worry about it.
Scientifically, A dial indicator can be positioned against the shaft hub to check for bearing free play. Generally, Up and down shaft movement should be no more than 0.003 to 0.006 inches. End play should be 0.001 to 0.003 inches.

Yeah, mine whines a little too. I'd say mine has excessive play, but theres no interference.jablackburn wrote:I don't know the scientific answer to your question, but that's probably not bad for as many miles are on that thing.
