Canadian part sites & best shipping prices

Hey guys, I'm back after being a little busy.

Well I was just checking out my saved shopping cart at ipd for the PCV job (with related items) I need to do...When I went to "calculate shipping" my jaw dropped. I thought let me check out how much JUST the PCV kit is itself to ship to eastern Canada. The kit is $96.00, the shipping is $91.00 --

... I fell off my chair. Then i barfed.
I don't get it, the oil trap can't possibly be heavy enough to justify that (yes I know, customs and duties included in the option I chose - you pay it either way so..) Nobody would EVER pay that I don't think. I've made a larger order from there before that didn't cost as much shipping, probably about the same weight.

So, I called FCP Groton to compare. I called because their online shipping calculator never works for me (but their customer service is great, and helpful - so is IPS's

). Anyway, the guy told me for the PCV kit it would be $137.00 including shipping. $115.00 for the part and only $22.00 for the shipping. That's completely reasonable. I duno what IPD is smokin'. Hah.

So my question is this: Do any of you know good sites to order from, either in Canada, or the U.S. that have consistent good shipping prices.

Another important question I have is about the kit differences.
I've read through the excellent PCV job repair threads on these forums (eg: jablackburn's, hope i spelled right), and I remember specifically that their was discussion about the differences in the PCV Kit from IPD.com and the PCV kit from FCPgroton.com. If I remember right, the IPD kit used better hoses, better brand names etc. and possible the oil trap - I don't remember exactly, I'll try and find the post.
This is the reason I wanted the one from IPD specifically! Damn. haha
Anybody got the details on the differences, jablackburn I believe used the IPD one, who has used the FCP one.

The FCP PCV kit seems to use the ... 'oem' oetiker style clamps, which would make you think it was ... more 'oem'

But I do remember somebody mentioning that the IPD kit used better parts.

EDIT: I know I said "Nobody would EVER pay that I don't think", but that being said, if it were a case where there's even an off-name-brand part in the FCP kit that is important (I consider it all important though..) I might not have a CHOICE. I don't like to skimp on parts. Any.

Autopartsway.ca is a good site. I have used it many times for different vehicles. Prices are cheaper, shipping is usually FREE is total is over $75. and they are based in Canada so no customs/ broker etc. I just bought a heater core and tune up stuff, saved over $100 from local shops (Napa etc) and parts were here within 3 days.

2D0500K -- Fuel Injector Seal Kit - $12.50
2K2759 -- Vacuum Elbow Kit - $10.95
Total = $23.45. Shipping (w/customs and that incl.) is $74.08, so 97.53. The price of shipping alone is over three times the price of the two items total price. The two items can't even weigh 1 lbs, and I think that's generous (fuel injector seal kit...).
I'm actually really sad now, I just lost one really good site that I trusted. Either their calculator is off, or -- I don't even know.

autopartsway.ca is ..meh, ok. They don't have the kit. and they have very few of the parts in it. So, it's not worth it.

I've used FCP for most of my Volvo parts needs. The shipments to Canada are quick, and the 'UPS WorldEase' shipping method means no nasty brokerage surprises when the box arrives. Don't forget to use the discount code at the top of this page.

I've used AutoPartsWay a couple times, and wasn't as impressed. Shipping time seemed to vary depending on where the parts were coming from - I don't think they stock much themselves.

I've used 'autopartsonlinecanada' with some success. Reasonable prices on stuff I got, although I've read some posts here warning against sites that operate under many different names in the US and Canada and I think this is one of them. That being said, everything came correct, within two days max (next day if ordered in the morning). Their customer service is good, I had to make a return and there was no problem. I probably wouldn't get timing components or sensors from there because I don't think it's worth the risk, best to stick with Volvo parts suppliers for that stuff.

I think I've also found a shop that has a few locations in Canada. They just quoted me a pretty good price on turbo oil cooler lines, and they ship to other provinces as well. I don't know if they're OEM or not, but even if aftermarket, they're still 25% cheaper than the aftermarket turbo lines at other places I've checked.

A long source of angst for me is stoneaged shipping policies. The American companies that grow are the one's that realize that per capita Canadians order alot more than 10% of of the American market as our population would suggest; and then adapt to be competitive internationally. FCP is a reasonable example of this.

My sources are: www.autopartsway.ca FCP Groton and eBay. Also a really great indy Volvo repair shop and retailer called ReVolv in Saskatoon.

Depending on what the prices are etc. Sometimes it is cheaper to get from FCP with shipping than autoparts way etc. FCP has bigger inventory.

Sorry IPD, your not an option for me; you may have awesome stuff but your international shipping policies are an uncompetitve joke. I would have bought their sway bars but I can't imagine the convulsing I would go through after I saw the shipping price. IPD, is this a result of a poor policy of shipping or price gouging? Maybe it is volume problem and tough to negotiate good terms with a shipper?

When I can get an OEM wheel bearing from California from eBay for $80 shipped, no one can compete with that!

I agree with the whole stoneaged shipping policies - not just with car part sites. It's with a lot of stuff, usually you can't even GET the thing you want if you live in Canada (from the U.S.).
But yes - like you said "Maybe it is volume problem and tough to negotiate good terms with a shipper?" I can see that.
At the same time, do you want more business? haha, we live on the same piece of land for T5 sake!
