I refuse to wrestle with this more than an hour without asking for help. My first oil change on this 850 and the shop that did the last one really made it difficult for me to take this thing off. I have looked up all types of tips and tried everything that I own and not a budge. I have tried breaking the gasket seal but I can't get any type of thing up in that space to do that & I have tried making a grip on the old filter while trying lots of things that normally work. I wanted to make positively sure before I turn to drastic (messy) measures that this is supposed to be a normal lefty loosey off. I can't imagine how or why they put this on so tightely not that long ago, but it's taking WAY too long to do something so simple that I am leaving it for awhile. Please let me know that I am for sure turning it the right way to loosen. Counterclockwise? Thanks!

Yes, counter clockwise is the way to loosen it. One guy said that it will come off easier if you do it with the car running, just to break it loose.

I had one stuck on before but it was on there for a couple of years. Don't have to much fun.

Hammer a long stout flatblade scewdriver through the body and make it come out the other side. Then twist CCW. Stabbing it will be your vengeance on the darn thing

Not much room for the old screwdriver trick. I have added a band type oil filter wrench with a swivel handle to my arsenal...
swivel handle being the key. You are only able to get the band on the filter about an inch and a half or so, and when you have it in place and put tension on the band, you are only able to turn the filter a little ump at a time before you need to loosen,re-grip,and turn again.

I have had to destroy filter and then use a punch on the holes on the base where oil passes on several occasions.
If I ever cause serious harm to the person I discover has over tightened an oil filter or spark plug I will fight tooth and nail to get all jury members as trade mechanics. I know I'll get off the charges for sure.....

I have a filter tool with a nylon band, 3 inches, at the end of a bar that fits on the end of 1/2 in ratchet. you wrap it around the bar and put the rest around the filter before turning it. a gloved hand helps also, try it with the motor warm.

I have already drained oil long ago so not sure that warming it up is a good idea now, but I am still in the cerebral mode of attack. My next phase will get ugly and then the neighbors start coming around. But at least one of them may try it for awhile and give me a break. If I don't get it tonight I will be at my favorite shop tomorrow just to drag the guy over here to take it off! And I am not joking! The owner will be in total agreement this is pathetic!

This is a canister type disposable filter, right?
Why not just grab it with a big pipe wrench and get done with it?

Get your screwdriver and drive it up towards the mounting plate as suggested by Jimmy. You can get in there from the passenger front corner of the car. You only need 1 inch to get it started.

I like to first go about 1/2 way up the filter and straight across until I puncture the other side of the filter and then use the screwdriver to turn it. At a minimum it opens up the filter so you can see the upper plate which will take the damage and be discarded when done.

Be careful of the aluminum oil pan - but other than that - get ugly with it.
