Hey Everyone,

This weekend I'm working on replacing the PCV on my Turbo with an OEM Volvo kit I purchased. So far the installation has been smooth and I'm getting to know the turbo more. :D

Anyway, on the kit I bought the think line that runs from the oil trap to the air intake pipe to the turbo has an extra smaller (maybe vacuum line, like) line in the same casing it. It looks like it connects somewhere by the A/C compressor, Alternator, Power steering pump mounts on the front of the engine. From behind, by the turbo, it looks like it may connect somewhere around there possibly. I looked on the old kit I removed (URO brand) and didn't see the extra small line on that kit.

Any thoughts on where this extra line may connect to?

If this has been answered before, please let me know the forum and I can read through that!

Thanks!

That small vac line connects to a metal nipple on the passenger side end of the intake manifold. Hook it up when reinstalling the manifold but take a look at the manifold now, make sure there is a nipple. Not all models have that nipple.

Oh, and at the turbo it connects to a plastic nipple right next to the PTC. I can dig up a pic if you need. Again, your 94 may have none or one or both nipples.

If you are doing a '94 I hope you got the right kit.

Make sure you take the PTC off of the base of the intake tube and clean that with carb cleaner real good.

Also, you need to take the EGR valve off of the intake and clean it real good. Mine was 80% clogged and tossing an occasional EGR code.

Not there on a 1994 - just ignore that line.

The line will run from the PTC @ the turbo to a port on the vacuum tree. Since you don't have the kit with it, buy some vac line (6 mm?) to run up there.

On a side note, make sure both ports in the PTC nipple are clean.

Awesome! Thank you everyone for your input.

I would not have considered to check/clean the PTC, but I will make sure to do that when I reassemble my car tomorrow.

On a side note, if I remember correctly, the intake on my 94 doesn't have an extra nipple on the passenger side...I think mine runs from the PTC up to the valve cover, around the spark plug boot for cylinder 2 then back to the driver's side of the engine and connects to the vacuum tree. It may do the same thing as the vacuum-like hose that is in the PCV hose. :?

I may end up removing the extra vacuum hose that may not be needed for my car.

Take that big metal tube that runs up around the valve cover out and keep it as a souvenir. It just clogs up.

Ah, I've always wondered what that metal tube was used for...if it makes the car run better, it will be removed!

It was originally used to heat the oil vapors that pass through the vacuum line. Crud gets stuck and builds up in the bends over the years. It was omitted in the 1995 model year and the line was run with the oil trap tube to the other side of the intake manifold.

1993/1994 were kinda "experimental" years for the 5 cylinder cars and there were some strange things tried out.

Would it be better to get a '95 intake manifold and run the tube over there?

I wouldn't get rid of the tube, it is still needed. Not connected you will likely get a P0172 code. I would either pull it out of the foam or back it part of the way out of the foam and connect it to the tree like Justin said. It is suppose to go from the PTC, TO the tube that loops on the cam cover, then connect to the tree. So I'm guessing that it would be best to connect it from the PTC straight to the vacuum tree.

Volvo must have seen some benefit to running it across the motor to the far side of the intake manifold???

Two notes: be sure you attach the tube BEFORE installing the intake manifold, or it gets pretty hard to do. (Don't ask me how I know this so certainly...)
Also, the other end of the tube on my kit was too large to fit tightly on the nipple on the attachment back near the turbo. I had to attach it around a 3mm vac hose, and the 3mm hose over the nipple, otherwise the vacuum changes kept blowing it off.
