1996 850GLT Wagon Car just turned off while idling
Greetings fellow Volvolonians. To the point, just bought an 96 850 GLT wagon four days ago, my dream car. On the way to work the other day the car just sputtered and died while I was idling at the store. It started back up for a few seconds then died again. I walked to work. Later that day I pulled and put the same pump back. Car starts and I drove 30 miles on the freeway before it sputtered and died again. I pulled and put the same pump back again and the car starts, I rev the engine a few times and pull off, get about 10 feet and car dies again. I have fuel coming through the fuel filter and pressure at the fuel rail. Pulled fuel rail and have fuel coming through injectors, although I don't know if its a good flow. The car has 230k on it but was well taken care of (seemingly). The night before this happened I ran the car till the fuel light came on. When I pulled the pump I did notice a very little amount of particles on the screen. If there's anyone out there who could help me I'd be very grateful. Spent all my money on this car and need to get to work. Thanks.

Classic bad fuel pump relay problem. Try searching threads and also in the volvo repair database for guidance on how to either replace or jump with wire.

Hello fellow volvolonians! Issue has been fixed.
this is the best site in the world. Anyway for anyone who runs into the problem that I did, just replace the fuel pump, fuel relay, and the oil filter. Apparently when the pump goes out, it MAY not go all out at once, but give you some problems beforehand. My problem was that since I was getting pressure at the fuel rail I figured that the pump was working and that the problem was something else. Checked the ignition coil, it was good, did the fuel relay jump thing.... save time and money and get the pump. Sure fire way to check is to unhook fuel filter, have a bucket to catch excess gas and turn on ignition. If gas streams out then your pump is fine, no fuel comes out then replace. Thanks ya'll

That's what I tell people to do. Jump the relay, disconnect the fuel filter, turn the key to run. If you get no fuel, the pump is not working. Check the wires at the top of the tank, if they are getting power, change the pump.

This site is super-awesome!
My car wouldn't start. Felt pretty sure it was a fuel issue.
Found this thread. It is exactly what I needed. Followed the steps you all listed... Put a jumper in last night....and it started right up.
Will now replace relay & filter (for good measure).
Thanks
