I have a 1999 v70 base 2.4 non-turbo. I just replaced an axle, control arms, sway bars, strut assy. And basically the same except the axle on the right as well.
I was test driving it yesterday, 70 mph on the highway road great. Today I was coming up a small incline 10 mph and I heard a pop and the transmission seemed to fall out of gear. put it in N
Could the axle shaft pop out of the transmission? Is the transmission shot? I can hear something that appears to be moving in every gear but it will grind trying to go into park.
I have to shut the car off to put it into park. 143 K Daily driver.
Not sure how to proceed. Just dumped hundreds.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks John

Hey John, axles have been known to pop out... Sometimes the circlip is faulty, or isn't there (if it's the driver's side axle). On the passenger side, because there's a carrier bearing holding it in, it's a little harder for it to pop out. I'd get the car on jackstands and tug and pull on everything. Control arms and ball joint should be super tight, same with sway bar links (I'm assuming you mean the links and not the bar right? I'd imagine a shop would charge at least $1K to install a sway bar!), and all the strut stuff, all of that should feel really tight.
Unfortunately, there are a lot (read, mostly!) crappy rebuilt axles for our 20-yr-old cars...
Did it pop out while turning?

Get the front of the car safely up in the air and put it in drive and see what happens. You should be able to quickly tell if any of the axles popped out. It's been known to happen as mentioned above.

Axle pop-out happened to me after axle replacement. Indications are that the transmission had given up (no drive/reverse) but what's happening is the output at the transmission is just spinning with nothing to turn against. All it takes is one axle out not two, because the sides are allowed to slip. The side that's popped out gets all the torque, and the good side gets none.

Thanks so much for the answers to my post. From the sound of them it doesn't seem like I really screwed anything up to bad.
It happened (popped) when I was going straight not turning. I borrowed a tow dolly and got it home.
Hope to pull it back off tonight (rain) and get it back on the road. I hate driving a truck.
I know I lost alot of transmission fluid.
Thanks John

I replaced an axle once, and didn't push it in far enough. Everything seemed fine, test drove up to 70 mph with no problem. When I parked it I saw I was losing transmission fluid, and figured out it was because the seal at the transmission wasn't tight around the axle (because the axle wasn't all the way in).
I was lucky, because the end of the axle had twisted a little during the test drive (because only a fraction of the splines were engaged) so the axle was ruined but at least it didn't snap off in the transmission or screw up the transmission.
If you lost fluid, it's probably because the end of the axle isn't fully seated, so I vote for 'popped out' as well.

Hey folks, I can't seem to get an axle in there. The one that I thought popped out was not fully seated. Is it possible there may be a transmission that was replaced? I can only find one automatic trans for this vehicle. I just reordered another axle. The old one goes in and out no problem, I thought when it popped out it may have damaged the trans. Any experience and advice would be appreciated.
Having re-read the posts I may have damaged the first axle.
Thanks John

Is the circle still present on the one you originally pulled out? Maybe it, or a part of it, is stuck in the transmission?
I'd definitely try to align the old and the new axle side by side for checking length (and measure them carefully) and if you can get a calipers from HF for $10 measure the diameters at the splines.

Where did you get the axle? If it is made in China, just throw it out, go to a boneyard and rebuild an O/E one. If you ordered a new one, did you make sure you got the right one. The manual and automatics are different part numbers. If you bought it from a non Volvo/European place, then they may have given you the wrong part. Lastly, once you pull out the axle shine a light in there and check the teeth on the transmission side. You should be OK. About 10 years ago I had a 1995 Maxima GLE and the mechanic put in the wrong axle. Same thing happened to me, but the teeth were still good. Good luck, hope all works out for you.
