Anyone had issues with Xemodex customer service?

Post by s10lowrider1994 »

The hits just keep coming this week. As if one car being in the pooper wasn’t enough, now my dd is having etm problems. At least my old rag bomb is back up and running, cvvt valve number 3 did the trick. Anyway I’ll start by saying that I’ve had this car since 2012, it came with a Xemodex etm already on it which is part of the reason I bought it. It appears to be having some issues and they won’t even look at it for me. I even offered to send it in on my dime, nope. Now the warranty doesn’t transfer, I get that, but it’s not like these things cost $20. Either you back your products or you don’t. This one being cooked obviously has some bearing on if I’ll buy another one, it also worries me because my other car has a Xemodex unit on it too. Is this how they are with customer service? “We are so confident in our products that they carry a lifetime warranty, but not really”. I don’t want a freebie, I just want them to tell me why it randomly started humming for 20 minutes and why it occasionally hiccups and throws the ets light. A good product will still have problems, it’s how you deal with them that gets you your reputation IMO.

Now I’m being told that they can’t find the original invoice and that based on the sticker, the software is incorrect. Would it really work for so long with incorrect software and then randomly develop symptoms? I don’t know what went on before I got this car but I sounds like Xemodex is blowing smoke. When I ask questions, all I get is “I don’t know why it worked, it shouldn’t have worked”. But it did, and it still does, it just randomly hiccups and hums for eternity now when it didn’t before.

Most warrantys have time of service/sale built into the pricing strategy, you do learn not to take a limited warranty as any statement of MTBF once you read the fine print. FCP warrantys stuff for life, but only for the original purchaser on that car, which is fair.

Common misconception ... the warranty is not for the stuff. The warranty is that the buyer will not need to buy a replacement.

Indeed. And when you think of the margins on reselling stuff, this makes sense.

Oh I get the warranty part, I own a business myself. I might have handled it a bit differently if someone was going to potentially spend more money with me, especially after I just bought one of their units for my other vehicle. They wouldn’t even test the thing if I sent it in, that’s pretty terrible customer service IMO. I don’t want a freebie, I really just wanted them to give this one a once over before I spent the money on another one. I’d at least like to know why it failed before I spend almost $700 on the same product, especially since they are so arrogant about how perfect their products are.

I think I probably just talked to a clueless person so might call back after while. First they couldn’t find the invoice, then they located it but said the date didn’t match with what I was telling them. Then he said there’s no way my vehicle would ever run based on their information, but couldn’t explain why it did when offered proof. Then I sent them a picture of the sticker on the etm, it apparently didn’t jive with the invoice he had. It was one confusion after another. What I got from them was “this is weird, we can’t explain it, you’re on your own”. Whatever invoice they claimed to have was either incorrect or non existent and they couldn’t be bothered to help me further. My car still runs and I’m still scratching my head as to why. The tech flat out told me it shouldn’t function, but it does, and it did so almost flawlessly for all these years. I asked if maybe the PO had sent it back for service at some point or had it cloned and maybe that’s why the info wasn’t adding up, they had no idea. Strange situation, they were as confused as me, testing it out on my dime seemed like a good idea to me, at least we’d both know what was happening and I’d probably give them more of my money.

I had a similar issue as on their web-site it said lifetime warranty. It did not say it was only a warranty for the original purchaser on the receipt I got from the PO either. Got the same short change as you got as I was not the original purchaser. Again got no dice on the way forward.

Fortunately I have a spare EM for both my 00 V70's that work and should be able to be cloned if needed. Fortunately neither have been to Xemodex. They stopped dealing directly with the public too. You have to now bring or pay for a repair through one of their 'partners' like FCP. You pay them and then get shipping info to ship direct to/from Xemodex, with FCP never touching it. Maybe that is the way to go, have it rebuilt by Xemodex through FCP for their warranty!

Man you’ve got all kinds of parts, lol. I swapped the one over from my other car and it runs perfect, so I’m pretty certain it’s the ETM. The random issues have always been there, but recently have become more frequent. Ets light will come on randomly, car will hiccup, sometimes acceleration is delayed, idle drops coming to a stop. My other car did the same thing when the etm was starting to fail. All of these symptoms are non existent with the good Xemodex unit from my other car installed. I was hoping it was something else but I cant get any of the symptoms to appear with the known good etm installed.

The relation between the ECM and ETM is complex. Software allows X deviation of commanded/actual throttle position for an interval of Y, where X and Y vary with software revision. With the stock white or yellow label ETM, the carbon track wears and the errors mount up and cause limp mode. It fails much more lumpy than a MAF or a other sensor
