Will a '98 angle gear fit my '99 V70XC?

Post by jvl »

I have a '99 V70XC, it has 200k miles.
The bevel gear whines. Changing the oil didn't help. I don't know the current part number. Where is it located?

Located a good used angle gear for a reasonable price, but it's from a 1998 V70 awd. That part number is P9183972.

I know there's differences in flange sizes, and from what I've read they can be swapped, correct?

Are there any other differences?

My v70xc is a late '99 (VIN YV1LZ56K8Y2661331)

Thanks for any insights.

There is a VIN brake in mid 98', from which point on the AWD is the same as 99'.

I will try to dig that up, I know I have a document somewhere that describes this.

I can't find the information on the VIN break anymore.

But, the part number for a 98' -99' angle gear is 8602679. That is the one I bought from Volvo a few years ago for my late 98' V70XC. That car was manufactured AFTER the VIN break and it is shared with 99'. So this one would be a direct fit for yours.

I don't know about the one you saw from the 98' AWD. I suspect it might be one from before the VIN break and would not fit. I will keep digging for the VIN break, I know it's in my e-mails somewhere...

Hope this helps,

Dirk

Again, thanks much for looking this up, I will not proceed then unless I can get more certainty on the vin break.
This is all good info and helps me in my search.

Please let me know if you run into the e-mail about the vin break? The seller is parting out a car so I think I can get the VIN belonging to this angle gear from him.

The last 6 digits in model year 98 must be higher than 465001. I gleaned this info from SS, you can read through this thread for more info:

Great! Thanks!
Based on the info from the topic you linked to, I've asked the seller for the VIN number and a picture of the flange and hope it turns out to be the right angle gear.

I was in that same situation a few years ago and may have documented that VIN break on one of my videos. I was given a VIN breat that was NOT correct. It was several hundred off. I did end up getting an angle gear that worked. My mechanic had to swap the cone over from one to the other.
