2013 XC90 Transmission fluid type (3.2 Engine)

Help, Advice, Owners' Discussion and DIY Tutorials on Volvo XC90s. The XC90 proved to be very popular, and very good for Volvo's sales numbers, since its introduction in model year 2003 (North America).

2013 XC90 Transmission fluid type (3.2 Engine)

Post by frenchyaz » Mon Mar 19, 2018 10:11 am

Hi guys,

Vehicle: 2013 Volvo XC90 3.2 3.2L L6 B6324S5

My owner manual states I need JWS 3309 while other sources state Auto Trans Oil AW-1.

I'm confused and I was wondering if one of you guys has a similar car year and if so what fluid do you use?

Thanks for your input and yes, it's my first Volvo ;o)

http://forums.swedespeed.com/showthread ... (JWS-3324)

Really has to do with chassis number (last 6 of VIN), by then it's pretty much only the 3.2 that's available in the US market. V8 cars remain with JWS3309 regardless as to chassis number.

Little debate whether the fluids are interchangeable, answer is most likely yes. On the other site, we did a bunch of looking around for this answer, PN for the exchange TF-80SC changes after 568000 but cannot find anything else more specific that also does. No SW changes, no individual part number changes for the chassis break, just a new PN for the exchange transmission and a reference to the use of AW-1 after chassis 568001. Couple folks (me included) "assume" it's a slightly modified fluid that may indeed be a bit thinner to get better gas mileage. Some friction modifiers, etc., but nothing overtly different between the two.

If others have additional info, please post as it's being asked more and more on this site and others.

*Edit-fix chassis number reference*

Ok so my chassis according to my VIN is (the last 6 numbers?) 645865... it would mean that it is less than 680000 so it should be JWS 3309 right?

I gave my VIN to FCPEuro to check and they came up with AW-1...

I'm currently asking the same question with Volvo support but I haven't heard from them yet.

All I know is that I don't want to put the wrong ATF in the car.

On a side note, I used to have a Mazda 6 and when I went to the dealer the guy assured my that I needed ATF M5, I had to show him the transmission dipstick which clearly stated T-IV....

Since then, I have a hard time with dealers but hope this one can be sorted out as my Volvo doesn't have a dipstick... ;o( sigh

I just read the link you provided, thank you. It seems like I need AW-1 for this car.

Where was the time where you didn't have to go through hoops in order to get the proper information? ;o(

If I get more info from Volvo about that I will post.

Suspect it's not the end of the world either way, since nobody can figure out the substantive difference in the transmissions between the two. You noted 645865 as your chassis, then you're BOT341 (AW-1 after 568001) per VIDA.

Usual and customary fluid substitutes for JWS3309 are Toyota T-IV and Mobil 3309 (have used both on my cars). There are links for Idemitsu and other fluid manufacturers for the 3309 and AW-1 fluids around, these may be fine as well but are not as commonly used over time so not a ton of history at least that I can find.

Lots of write-ups for how to do the exchange with the AW5 (5 cylinder) and TF-80 (V8, 3.2). Some folks are drain/fill over time, others (me included) do the pump out method. In either case, using 12 qts over the course will get a pretty good exchange of old vs new fluid.

Pretty straight forward task, whichever direction you go. Only thing to be aware of is level checks, both transmission need to be checked hot (50-60C), you'll see the references in the write-ups. AW5 has a dipstick, TF-80 does not (has a level plug in the bottom). If you're not going to follow the level check procedure, make a special effort to measure what came out and put only that back in.

Good luck with your job.

Thank you for the added information, appreciate it.

I usually do a drain and fill multiple times over the year.

I just got a MITYVAC 07201 Fluid Evacuator/Dispenser so I was thinking about getting the fluid from up top, measuring how many quarts I'm getting out and pour the same amount. Not sure if anyone has done it this way and how more/less efficient it is comparing to the drain and fill?

JWS 3309 is widely available, in fact AISIN brand is only $5/quart from FCP Euro so I'll go this route, after all they also make the transmission.

-- Thanks! --

Here's a good thread on the job with photos and diagrams - viewtopic.php?f=10&t=66985, could also do an internet search for "change transmission fluid TF-80SC", quite a few links on other Volvo centric sites.

Suppose a suck and replace would work fine, only hassle in my opinion might be taking the air filter box and trans fluid plug off and on. I do a pump out with a hose on a case of fluid into opaque gallon milk jugs, takes maybe 1.5 hours including warming up the car for a level check. Then I'm done and there's no need to go back for another 50-60k or so.

Lots of ways to do this. Know it'll seem obvious but however you do it the exchange, keep a bottle of fluid around for the final level check.

Thank you for the link, seems like a good week-end project ;o)

My car is only 37,000 so I guess I'll wait until 50,000 to start the process.

To be honest, I get to mine between 50 and 70k, whenever I remember to do it (ends up being every 4-5 years).

Unless you're towing and/or using the car for a taxicab (constant stop/go), any interval in the general neighborhood of 50k is a probably good place to be in my opinion.

I'm not towing or anything, my wife drives very little. On our new Mazda back in 2006 we got only 67,000 miles when we sold it in 2018....
