Has anyone replaced starter cable? Topic is solved

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Has anyone replaced starter cable?

Post by June »

On my monthly inspection under the hood I noticed a big red cable discolored at the end where it is fastened to another cable which I assume goes to the battery in the trunk. The red cable disappears in a loom going down which I assume goes to the starter. I am having no noticable problem with the starter. The car always starts nearly instantly. Should I replace the cable or is the discoloration no big deal? Can the discolored end be replaced? How did you get the cable out of the loom if anyone has replaced one before. I can imagine Volvo will want to replace the whole loom as it looks tightly put together as a unit. Thank You, June

I replaced mine, but not because it was melting like yours. I was having the crankshaft sensor interference issue which was causing very long cranking on my S80. Regardless it was an easy job.

I purchased a new premade 2 gauge cable with 5/16in lugs from this guy on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/271564807829?_t ... EBIDX%3AIT

It was more than just the cable, the post which is part if the under hood fuse box was burned. So I had my Volvo dealer replace it all. Thank you for the one person who answered. I think I could have done it had it just been the cable, but I was just afraid of the fuse box turning into a disaster I couldn't fix and costing more than just having a professional take it apart.
