2000 S80 T6 ETM damage

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2000 S80 T6 ETM damage

Post by AugusTulsa »

I haven’t heard back yet from Todd below. He’s a mechanic at Bill Knight Volvo of Tulsa.

The last time I had it in the shop was to replace a damaged turbo hose (so the mechanic said), and the mechanic (not Todd) said he cleaned the ETM as well. It’s the only time I am aware of it being removed, besides by me. When I called him back two or three months later regarding the same issue, he suggested an ETM rebuild for nearly $1000. Suspicious as hell, right?
I was wondering if you could form an opinion on my situation.
Thanks.

Subject: Damaged throttle body - 2000 S80 T6

Todd,

Yesterday I pulled my throttle body to clean the throat and valve. Once I got it out I noticed a huge gouge in the corner.

Take a look at the pictures I attached.

Because of the way it mounts to the manifold, I could not figure out how in the world it could have been damaged like that. Seems like it would definitely have to be removed, rather than a rock or some other projectile hitting it while driving. The pictures may not show enough detail of the hole, but it would have taken quite a lot of force to mess it up the way it is.

I'm sending this email to you because I am hoping to get a good opinion on this.

Thanks for your time. I sincerely appreciate it.

UPDATE!!!

I just found out that the throttle body on my car is for a 1999 model.
I spent 6 or 7 hours yesterday pulling it again to install a throttle body gasket. This time I noticed that the reason why it is damaged like that is so it will mount to the air intake manifold properly. The ’99 manifold and ’00 manifold are different. At some point a “genius” replaced the original ETM with an older one.

To my knowledge, I have all of the service records/receipts from the first and second owner, and only one mechanic is shown to have serviced the ETM, other than the software upgrade mandated by the recall, which has already been performed.

Many of you that contribute to this forum are extremely knowledgable, and I am asking anyone and everyone, What can I do about getting the proper ETM installed on my car?

Thanks,
AugusTulsa

Well,
you could pull one out of a 2000. But that would not help at all. It doesn't matter what year it is from, each ETM is synced to the car. You would need programming for any ETM you use. My suggestion is to order one from xemodex.com and send that one that's in the car back to them as a core.
