some more.. explanation about my rear view mirror transplant...

NOTE: I purchased a mirror from the yard which was off of an 2005 model S80 , they look identical from the outside, however the inside is where I'm guessing they upgraded some of the parts, i.e.: the double sided tape, and a large square housing with a spiral coil which is clipped over the circuit board. On the 2005 model they got rid of that and added a small vertical attachment with flat film type wires. However this does not get in the way of the transplant.

So... if you buy a 1999-2003 rear view mirror, your worry is to be careful when separating the mirror from the double sided tape as you would not want to break the circuit board, and on the 2004 and up (2005 in my case) you would not have to worry about removing any kind of glue or double sided tape

However you would have to clip the 2 studs which go though the holes on the older circuit board, and thats it.

Both mirrors are the same lengh and thicknes, also becareful with separating all the parts, the back mirror casing/housing on the 99 and up has a deep valley for the piece i mentioned earlier so that it fits snug when the cover is closed ( hope im clear lol) as on the 05 model there is no valley, since they got rid of that piece and made a smaller piece.

so a few things to look out for, everything fit just fine. BE GENTLE WHEN REMOVING/SEPARATING THE CASING, THEY ARE LOCKED IN VERY TIGHT AND IF YOU FORCE IT YOU WILL BREAK THE LOCKING TABS, AS I DID ON ONE OF THEM! so take your time, if you can use a plastic tool which is slim enough you will be happy, or even a butter knife. wear eye protection!!!!!!

here is the new mirror soldered to the original circuit board , note: if you are using an 05 model mirror, it does not have the double sided tape, instead its a flat plastic housing where it is already attached to the mirror, so all i had to do was solder the wires and attach the mirror to the mirror, it has 6 small locking tabs. 2 small modifications i had to do and i discovered these mod's as i was installing the unit into the rear view casing:<br />1 there are two studs which go through the two holes in the circuit board, i couldnt close the casing, and had a hard time figuring out what was blocking the instalation, so i simply cut it with wire cutters (the 2 studs are soft plastic). and you dont have to worry about the mirror moving, becasue at this point they are locked in to the plastic housing which is connected to the mirror. on the 99 and up , you would have to perfectly align the mirror to the back of the circuit board with markings, as previously explained by a fellow Volvo enthusiast ( i forget his name) on the S80 forum.
