Issue with ETS light with my 99 V70GLT

Post by skouk007 »

My V70GLT ETS light been on/off for the last couple of months. Finally today it stay on and I got a chance to bring it to the dealer. Here's the symptom I have when ETS light on.

1. Car doesn't want to move (stall)
2. Limp Home mode

The dealer is refusing to replace ETM. They said that they have to follow Volvo protocol before repairing or replacing ETM. The protocol is to clean PVC (cost $288 not cover under warranty) first so that they can trouble shoot ETM issue.

Four hours later I got a call from the dealer again after they cleaned PVC compartment, they found out that AIR oil trap is so dirty with oil build up and need to be replaced before they can proceed with their so-called Volvo protocol (cost $428 replacing air oil trap).

Please advise what steps I need to take here. I'm very upset with these so-call protocols. Why can they replace ETM base on the codes they retrieved? I think they got two codes: 91xxx codes.

Any suggestions to what I can do? My ETM warranty will be expired next month (2/9/09). Seems to me that this dealer is not willing to get this fix at the moment without having to go thru these protocols. (Ray Price Volvo in East Stroudsburg, Pa)

Thanks

I am in the same boat as you 99 V70 GLT Turbo same thing. They told me from North America Volvo that they could tear the car down , at my cost, at the dealership it would take a few days. so I would have to leave it, no loaner, and this is my only car. The agent from Volvo USA blatetly told me it looked like it was not the ETM throttle body and was not going to replace it , so I better get over it.
I dont appreciate his tone and I kept my cool, probably should have told him where to stick it. This is probably why VOLVO is not selling cars very well , customer service and dealership SUCKS.
I would contact the Highway Safety Admin. or SaferCar. and let them know - let the Feds know , they did the recall. It is a safety issue, remind them "done right the first time" . they put that on everything on their techs.

I responded to your other post about the ETM.
I know you have the codes for the ETM but more could be going on...if you're having a hard start condition with low fuel, it could be a fuel filter. Ask your new shop about that and see what they say. If you want to go for this new ETM, I've posted the information as a reply to your other post.

Hello folks I just want let everyone knows the status of my V70GLT.

Their intention was to clean TB, replaced air oil trap. We fought with the dealer to the point that that they asked me to bring a tow truck to tow my car out of their garage since I don't want them to replace oil trap without a written guarantee that it's going to fix ETS.

After I hung up the phone when they told me to bring a tow truck and get my car out of their garage, I decided to call local TV consumer advocate and told them my bad experience I had with that dealer. I also called Volvo headquarter and law firm for for advise as well.

30 minutes later I got a phone call from the dealer and they told me good news. They decided to replace ETM which is under warranty and they also replaced oil trap at my expense.
It costs me $375 out of my pocket for oil trap ($25 part, $350 labor, I'm not thrill).

Perhaps what changed their mind about replacing ETM was the call from local TV consumer advocate, that's my guess! Anyway, now that everything is done I'm happy with my car, but I would never ever go back to that dealer nor recommend any volvo owners for what I've been thru.

All things considered you didn't get ripped off, but only $25 for the "part," concerns me. The reason for the high labor charge is it took them at least 2 hours to take the intake manifold off and put it back on, which is required to change out the oil trap, but really if they had gone that far, they should have replaced all of the hoses from it (and the passageways) all the way to the bottom of the accordion air intake hose and cleaned the PTC valve out that's on the end of that larger hose. It seems like all they did was change out the trap because that's what they told you your car needed to begin with...hmmm. You might want to inquire exactly what they did do. It would not have been much more on the labor (if any) to do this job right, especially if you were nearing 100K miles (or are over).

You know, Volvo dealers can really milk this ETM issue with lots of cost to the customer preventive maintenance and willfull FUD. Somebody should design (Don??) an unambiguous ETM tester that you simply plug the ETM connector into. It slowly rotates the throttle through its full range and monitors the output of the TPS. If one sees "wierdness", end of discussion! No "cleaning", no PVC crap, no MAF, etc!
