Volvo Repair Database XC60 T6 - 100k+ mile reliability?

Post by chapel »

Wife and I are thinking of getting a 2010 T6 R-design
It's just about to pass 100k miles and we're looking at possibly getting an aftermarket warranty

So for a 5 year plan from endurance

5 years/100k
Extra Supreme Plan
Covers
Powertrain - engine, trans, axle, 4WD, HVAC, Electrical, PW, Cooling, Fuel.
NO SUSPENSION, BRAKES, ECU, O2 SENSORS. Also doesn't cover "Technology" like Navigation, radio, backup cameras, etc...
$100 ded - $3370 up front ($183 down, $145/mo for 24 months)
$200 ded - $3202 up front. (no brainer between the $100 and $200 deductible there)

No lock in. Cash out or transfer to another vehicle or to new owner. Prorated refund.
Roadside assistance
Covers a rental up to 5 days

5 years, 100k miles, that's a pretty long coverage plan.

Apparently if I take delivery before 100k, I qualify for a better, but shorter plan that covers things like suspension, brakes, ECU, O2 sensors, but no technology.
The cost goes up considerably. $4878 for a $100 deductible, $4471 for a $200 deductible.

But rather than shell out $3370 on top of the $16,000 I'm dropping on the car itself... I wanted to see if this is a good idea or not? Seems like these are pretty reliable cars overall from what I've been reading.

Probably not a lot of help to you, given my mileage is below what you are looking at. But, my wife has had a xc60 T6 that we bought new in august 2009. It hasn't done a lot of miles. Approximately 85,000kms to date. I Had it serviced by the dealer until it went out of warranty. I then serviced it myself. As amongst other things they were charging me $240 for oil. I can buy the same 0w 40 oil from a local automotive place, by the 4l container for about $140 per oil change.

Over this time the car has had the following other than oil changes.

1) 33000kms, changed tyres
2)40,000kms rear brake pads were shot. I replaced all 4 with akerbono ceramics. They have been great. Totally eliminated the brake dust on the wheels.
3) 50,000 kms the blue and silver Volvo sticker fell off the front emblem which seems to be a common fault. I haven't replaced it, more as I just find it annoying, that Volvo cant make their logo stay on and why should I pay for their advertising.
4) 65,000 kms vacuum pump gasket started leaking. I replaced the seals. and spark plugs.
5) 70,000kms, I replaced the trans, and other drive line fluids (more as preventative, and as Volvo doesn't have a stellar reputation for transmissions)
6) 75,000kms xenon bulbs went, both within about 2 weeks of each other
76,000kms, new tyres.
7) 84,000kms top engine mount needed replacing.

I have also put in 2 new batteries over this period and changed the brake fluid twice.

Im about to change the coolant now (probably should have done that earlier).

No other issues really. The fan motor started making bearing noises probably around 20,000kms. It has been about the same since, so I haven't done anything about it. Again another common fault.

The car has been great to drive. I like the performance of the T6. I wanted my wife to get the diesel, but she wanted the performance. She seems to get an average of about 14l per 100km. She does tend to put the boot in when she drives, and does a lot of short trips.

Hope it helps a little.

Clint

Good grief...put the money in the bank and earn interest and wait for something that will most likely not happen! $4000 would cover about anything at a small indie shop and get rental from your insurance company. Cannot believe people drop this kind of money for peace of mind!
