Folding mirrors - 2006 V70 AWD

Post by scot850 »

My wife has starting driving this car. Her first, well actually 2nd issue is that the car does not have folding in mirrors like what was her old (now our son's) 06 XC70.

Does anyone know if folding mirrors were an option on models of P2 other than the XC70? The XC70's have larger mirrors than the S60/V70 cars. If they were not fitted to any other models, I'd consider installing the larger mirrors to the V70 as the standard ones are way too small anyway I find.

Has anyone tried retrofitting folding mirrors to a car that did not have them from new?

Thanks,

Neil.

Been corresponding with the service manager at one of the local dealers. I think it may be physically possible to transplant the parts, but the issue may be that it looks like the system has to be programmed. Not sure what, possibly the DDM or CEM. The issue with that is that they have 4 variants of software, 2 to un-program the system from having had folding mirrors and 2 to convert to having folding mirrors, but they are now NLA. Not sure if there is a way around that today. Even the parts may be hard to get or just stupid expensive, so used parts would have to be the way.

I know of a 06 XC70 being parted out that has the folding system, but they have the larger mirrors which were not fitted to V70's or S60's.

I know it is possibly to actually physically swap the mirrors as I removed an incorrectly fitted one from the 02 XC70 that has a V70 small mirror fitted on the passenger side.

I need to find out if swapping a DDM from a same year car might work without programming that has the folding mirrors. Also what other parts are needed and if the wiring harness or other parts may be needed.

There must be a process for this seeing as the software exists.

Where I grew up, we didn't have running water, and we didn't have no stinking folding mirrors! And we LIKED it!

I don't care either, but as my wife drives the car most, she parks in places that have narrow parking spots and would prefer they were fitted. I don't think it can be done, but I will check it out to see if it can be done first. Same with not having back up sensors. She is used to those but it is easier to fit a camera and bluetooth head unit so that is on the cards shortly. I just have to get over the man cold so I can take the center dash apart to find what was done to fit the Pioneer single din unit and hoping adapter cables were used and not the usual butcher work.

If my car, I would try to install used folding mirrors and install a manual switch to control. Test the switch plan before installation. Get manual switch operation approval before starting the project.
I see I wrote all of this in reverse order.

I have asked the boss if she wants the regular color coded mirrors as fitted to the car currently (they are ridiculously small to me) or swap to the larger XC70. I recall removing the wrongly fitted passenger side mirror on the 02 XC70 that had an aftermarket S60/V70 fitted that was not working. I swapped in the correct used XC70 version to that car. That makes it clear to me they can be interchanged.

I have a possible source for folding XC70 mirrors and center stack switch (assuming the seller can prove they work). There are very few P2 V70/S60's in the junkyards currently and my requests to parts yards look like they fall on deaf ears. Not sure why they advertise and won't answer parts requests when they don't leave any other way of contacting them??

I do recall for some reason 01-03 DDM are the same, 04 DDM is unique, 05- are the same as far as I have found. What I am not sure yet is if the physical mirrors are interchangeable. The sticking point is still I have not found a way to program the system as it appears the software is listed as NLA.

my 08 S60 had power folding mirrors, apologies i missed this thread. It was a bit of an odd loadout compared to all the ones i saw at the junkyard.

I believe the mirrors linked to one of the auxiliary modules, and you can program with VDASH but someone mentioned a pin or something.

My current car doesnt have power folding mirrors and i do miss it a little. :P

The issue with switching is all the modules use some sort of encoded chip that connects to the panel at the bottom. Apparently the position does not matter as the switch itself has the coding for it. This will be recognized but you do need to program it apparently

Code: Select all

I do see from the link that VDash in theory can do it. I don't like those softwares that hold you to ransom everytime you need to use it. It is either that or pay a $750 US or so annual subscription.

I do have a Dice Clone already, and I did have a VDash software set up on my Laptop without the subscriptions paid. Did not have a chance to use it before my 'new' external SSD from Boot $ Go died after a few months. It looks like it may have also corrupted my laptop into the bargain. The laptop is at a specialist repair shop who say they think it may be Windows has been corrupted. Dave did sent out a replacement SSD, but so far I had that tested by the repair shop but it appears to be blank. I will have to wait until either of my laptops are repaired before I can try and test it. I'm hoping it is just protected until you boot directly from it. Time will tell. I plan to get the SSD cloned if it does work so should it fail again I can have it available or install it directly to a laptop. I could look at having one of the laptops cloned from the drive and run it on Win10.

I spend more time screwing around with computer issues than car issues these days!!

I did read the Swedespeed thread again. They seem to infer to get the button, you need to get the whole center console? Can you not just remove a blanking cap and fit a button?

It must be a blanking cap/board that sockets into the position. Look at these images from the king thread and my personal car. The mirror fold are in different positions in each.
