ATE made in Germany given the choice! This made in China problem has recently been on my mind. I drove a 2018 S90 Inscription T6 a few weeks back as a loaner for a couple of hours. This was a manager's personal demonstrator, not a service loaner driven by many. At 5K the breaks were horribly warped? I have never been in a new Volvo with warped breaks. Even the new breaks on my S80 installed by my dealer maybe 12K ago are perfect still... That S90 is the first Chinese Volvo I have driven and other than the breaks it actually was a nice car.
One other shortcoming I noticed was the Chinese deleted laminated windows. I have never seen Volvo up to now remove a safety item. The 2017 S90 made in Sweden has it, just watch the crash tests between 2017 and 2018. Now Volvo has been a lone force out there giving laminated windows other than windshields. Not even Mercedes benz gives laminated windows. You out there might say who cares? Well I was so glad to have laminated windows in my 2002 S80 when it rolled out in that field. All glass broken but stayed in place keeping my arm and dog from exiting the car during the event and not showering us with broken glass. So no glass in our eyes. I want the added safety of laminated glass on the side windows! So how many other shortcomings do the Chinese built Volvos have? June

Abscate, after reading my response you might wonder why I am talking about glass? If the Chinese skimped on the glass, I suspect the warped breaks were due to the steel quality also being skimped... I didn't really make that clear enough in my previous post. So given a choice between a European part or Chinese, European every time... June

I concur, if you can get it made in Germany or Europe in general, that's the way to go.
I was so disappointed a few years back when I ordered OEM brake rotors and they were made in China. No reason for that other than Volvo trying to make more profit on parts.
They started warping after 5k or so, and needless to say I would never buy them again.

"Warped" brake rotors happens when the brakes pads sit in one spot on a car that is a slow seller and doesn't move, literally. S90s are not selling at a fast pace and are sitting on lots much longer before selling. The rotor will get some serious pad transfer and the rotor is thicker and tougher where the pads rusted to rotors. Don't blame China, products change when competition dictates it. No listing of everything added to the models after Zhejiang Holdings got the deed to the kingdom. From everything I know Volvo is still operating with no direction from China. The money the Chinese owners supported got Volvo back into business after Ford stagnated the company.

This car was a manager's daily driver. My advisor borrowed it to ge me to my appointment since my car was not ready. So no it was not a car sitting around and had 5k on the clock so the sales manager had been driving it for some time to get to 5k miles.jimmy57 wrote: ↑03 Oct 2018, 11:42 "Warped" brake rotors happens when the brakes pads sit in one spot on a car that is a slow seller and doesn't move, literally. It had interstate rear break rumble and horribly warped rotors on the front. Never have I drove a Volvo demo/loaner with less than a perfect new feel. This was my first drive in a Chinese built Volvo.
So why is the Chinese built S90 missing the laminated glass???? The 2017 Swedish build had it??? June

Interesting! I was escorted to my car on the lift in process of getting new pads and rotors on all four wheels to see the engine rear main seal leak. I noticed the rotors in a stack and the packaging said made in Germany on the blue box rotors being installed at my dealer. I guess I was lucky and old stock off the shelf were being used. My 1st generation S80 is one of three still being serviced at my dealer. The 4th burned from fire under the passenger front seat this year and was a 5cyl AWD leaving mine and the other two T6 cars left. My advisor showed me the burnt car on a cigarette break. Apparently the lady drove it in with the seat smoking and burned at the dealer upon arrival. One more thing to worry about850 LPT wrote: ↑03 Oct 2018, 11:10 I concur, if you can get it made in Germany or Europe in general, that's the way to go.
