Thread to document and picture my cleaning of Mass Air Flow Sensor on my T5

Thinly veiled attempt to get some respect (R Dangerfield) on this forum....

One special tool needed - Volvo part 31415926535 - light green turbo hose fixture ( see pictures)

The MAF was really tight in the turbo hose and tough to pull on.

Loosen hose clamp (screwdriver) and then secure turbo pipe with special Volvo tool (must be green) and pull/wiggle/rock MAF out of turbo hose

...and clean with CRC spray cleaner - all around the sensor and wires, catching junk and solvent onto paper towel below.

Any directions to test one (not just unpluging it) with a multi tester would be greatly appreciated. Pictures work great!

Hi,

I have a 1998 S70 manual transmission. I want to thank you very very much for posting such great photo's and instructions. I need to smog check my car to register it, but they won't run a smog check unless the check engine light is off. Yadda yaddah

I can't afford to bring my car to the mechanic right now, so I bought a cheap-o code reader, and decided to DIY. Short story, $63 dollars later (cost of scanner and MAF cleaner) the check engine light is off.

Thank you everyone
S

Did you notice any kind of difference after cleaning the MAF?

Of course not. They only get dirty if you use oiled filters or really pathologically dirty air filters

This one goes way back to 2013 when I was a Volvo NooB and trying to solve my loose induction turbo hose by throwing parts at it rather than analyzing the failure

Using a proper TAMPER-PROOF TORX BIT to remove the sensor from the housing saves having to yank the MAF out of the hose. :)
