Unknown dash light, 1988 740GL

Post by matthew1 »

The following is a question on behalf of Robyn in Australia:
I wish to find out if anyone can help me with my 740gl 1988.

I am unable to find out what one of the symbols on the dash stand for, i have been to several mechanics, no good they have no idea.

Its the 3rd red light on the off side, it looks like bracetts with some other circle thingy inside (sorry not much good at this) At the begining it came on & off but now its on permantely, i'm hoping i haven't caused any damage as i've been driving around trying to get help.

The manual also has no pics or information on dash lights, i'm hoping you can help me here. Thankyou Robyn
My guess is brake fluid low warning. Anyone know?

I don't have an owner's manual for the Australian model but it is either low fluid or, if it is fitted with pad sensors, a pad warning.

I recalled seeing a post a few years ago about a different symbol on the dash and was able to pull up the thread. Here: Bill mentions that the Canadian 760T in the thread has an ABS light that shows a picture of the wheels rather than "ABS", any chance this could be the case for the Australian model as well?

Also, pad sensors? That sounds like an awesome feature to have, wish mine did

All my working life I refused to put stuff down on paper so it wouldn't come back to haunt me. Retired and see what happens!!!!

Darrell, I had forgotten I had written that. However, not all '88 740s had ABS as standard. Certainly not in the UK. The warning light for the UK models' ABS did depict the wheel but had "ABS" in the centre.

The low fluid or, as some people called it, brake failure light is a circle with an exclamation mark (!) in it and brackets either side of the circle.

I cheated ( ) and checked a 740 today.
