Volvo 850NA airbox mod holy grail

Post by div4scpro »

this is for everybody trying to figure out how to improve airflow on a NA850. I found the lower portion of an 850 airbox at a local self service parts yard. It doesn't have any of the pre-heat mechanism at the intake portion of the box and nothing else to interfere with the airflow, otherwise it is identical to the one on my 97 NA. It was laying on the ground near 93 thru 96 850's, but I don't know which one. Hopefully someone can identify what model it came on with these part numbers and the pictures I have attached. Part number on my 97 airbox is >PP-GF30<, on the unrestricted one it is >PP-T20<. If you figure it out please post to simplify for everyone else.

Nice find, don't know which car that would have come from. More then likely a turbo 850.

Your point being? :roll:
All you will get is maybe 1-2 hp and a lot more noise.;
Sort of a waste and spinning your wheels, don't you think?

In regards to the one of the replies I received on this post, this message was for those who have tried many different homemade methods to free up restrictions in their airbox. I was just trying to show them what I thought was a simpler method. How exactly will this generate more noise when the airbox remains closed and the laws of aerodynamics state that noise is created by the friction that is generated by air passing over an object in the path of that moving air. If I remove the object creating the friction and I have not increased the velocity of the air, I should be removing, or reducing, noise rather than increasing it. I expected better than sarcasm at this website.

Wish I could find a box like that without the flapper for my V-90. The pre heater is a PITA as mine has a bad actuator and I had to cobble up something to block it open on the cold side. That box won't add any noise ( like going to a K&N set up will) + fixes a real issue for those of us in warmer climates with these cars. Thanks for posting the find bro!

Good for you! Personaly im attached to my 850 turbo for going fast, but i see no harm in makeing the best out of what you have. If you look on the IPD website, and read through their blog back in 2008 you'll find an article where they tried to see how much power the could get out of an N/A. Even though i know i cant make alot of power from my N/A S70, i like things that could improve my mileage

that air box bottom is from any turbo 850. I got one for my friends 5 speed 850 from the junk yard.

Actually you don't need the whole box part. The intake snorkle clips into the box. I found a damaged box with a good snorkle. I got just the snorkle (for free as he didn't know what it was). I swapped out the dual inlet for the turbo one and installed a K&N replacement filter. Runs great!
